Penang's Fort Cornwallis, state museum and automotive gallery free for two days from tomorrow
Three Penang heritage sites - the Penang State Automotive Gallery, Fort Cornwallis and the Penang State Museum - will offer free entry for two days from tomorrow, marking Malaysia Day and the fifth anniversary of Penang Hill's Unesco Biosphere Reserve listing. State tourism committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said free admission to the gallery and fort has also been extended until October.

Penang art exhibition highlights landmine and cluster munition toll in Southeast Asia
An international photography and art exhibition on the human cost of unexploded ordnance opened at the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery in Gelugor, Penang, on Sept 10. ICBL-CMC director Tamar Gabelnick said Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam still suffer civilian deaths and injuries from cluster bombs and landmines dropped decades ago. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo cited Malaysia's ratification of the Ottawa Convention.

Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Penang reopens after RM6 million restoration
The 125-year-old Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Penang on Jalan Gurdwara in George Town reopened yesterday after a RM6 million restoration that began in 2004. The Category One heritage building, the oldest and largest Sikh temple in Southeast Asia, was restored with traditional materials and artisans from India, with a RM1 million donation from Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah.

Grave of Kedah war commander Tunku Mat Saad found in Jalan Perak
History activists have located the grave of Kedah war commander Tunku Muhamad Saad, known as Tunku Mat Saad, who died in 1847, at the Muslim cemetery of Masjid Jamek Hashim Yahaya in Jalan Perak, Penang. He led Kedah's attack on Siamese forces at Kota Kuala Kedah in 1838 and was later exiled to India before settling in Kota Perai and Penang.

Malaysian jazz vocalist Janet Lee and pianist Tay Cher Siang will perform a concert at Hikayat in Georgetown on 20th September. The duo will present an afternoon of jazz standards with a local twist, blending Mandarin pop, American songbook classics and Malayan swing.

Where Penang's wartime stories still linger
The Penang War Museum in Batu Maung, Penang, offers visitors an authentic experience of a British military fort from World War II, preserved in its original state. The site, which fell to Japanese forces in 1941 and later served as a prisoner-of-war camp, features tunnels, barracks, and gun positions, along with personal accounts from former POWs.
