Mother and son escape house fire in Kenyalang Park, Kuching
Two people, Lewis Lau Lee Wei, 39, and his mother Yii Siew Chuo, 70, escaped a fire that broke out in their house at Lorong Sim Kheng Hong 2, Kenyalang Park, Kuching early this morning. A ground-floor room was 80 percent destroyed and the living room was 20 percent affected. The Padungan fire station put out the blaze and handed the two victims over to family members.

Abang Johari: Trust key to Sarawak's progress, RM685m given via UNIFOR

Two men arrested after testing positive for drugs in Bau
Two men aged 25 to 29 were arrested beside Jalan Bau-Lundu in Bau, Sarawak, yesterday afternoon on suspicion of drug abuse. The Bau district police chief said both suspects were detained by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Bau district police headquarters and tested positive for drugs in initial urine screening. The case is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Cable thieves hit two Bau telecom towers, RM6,000 lost
Police in Bau district, Sarawak are investigating the theft of telecommunications cables from two separate communication towers yesterday. The first case at Kampung Opar involved about 80 metres of Power Cable RRU with losses estimated at RM6,000, while the second at Kampung Daun Singai saw about 70 metres of cable taken. Both sites are surrounded by forest and have no CCTV or security guards.

Heart patient in Landeh gets food aid from Hope Place Kuching
A 48-year-old man in Landeh, Sarawak, who has heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure, is receiving basic food supplies from Hope Place Kuching after his wife and daughter disappeared last year and his savings were drained. He was recently discharged from the Sarawak Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan and is doing freelance translation work while awaiting monthly welfare aid.

Cause of fish deaths along Sarawak River still unknown, says Dr Safiee
Hundreds of fish have been found dead along the Sarawak River waterfront, particularly around Kampung Boyan and Kampung Gersik in Kuching. The Sarawak Rivers Board, together with the state Agriculture Department and NREB, is awaiting laboratory results from water and fish samples taken on 12 and 14 September. The cause of the deaths has not yet been determined.

Siburan district proposal revived, RM5mil for multipurpose hall
A proposal to elevate Siburan in Sarawak to a full district has been revived, more than 10 years after it was first raised, citing its strategic location and growing population and economy. Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said the Siburan area, including Tapah and Beratok, could become a satellite town for Kuching and Serian. Sarawak targets 9 new OSEIC centres by 2030, RM30m for special needs centre in Samarahan
Sarawak plans to set up nine more One-Stop Early Intervention Centres (OSEIC) by 2030 to expand early intervention services for children with special needs. The state government has also approved RM30 million under the 13th Malaysia Plan for the first phase of the Sarawak Special Needs Community Centre in Samarahan, expected to be completed by May 2028. As of 31 December 2025, 745 children have received OSEIC services.

Five teens in Kuching admit gang robbery, sent to Henry Gurney School
The Sessions Court in Kuching on Monday ordered five male teenagers to be placed at Henry Gurney School in Puncak Borneo after they pleaded guilty to gang robbery. The robbery took place at a convenience store along Jalan Tun Jugah at about 4am on June 1, where a 19-year-old worker was threatened with a machete and wooden sticks and about RM1,000 in cash and cigarettes were taken. Two 18-year-olds will be held until they turn 21, while the three younger accused, aged 14 and 15, were each ordered to spend three years at the juvenile rehabilitation facility.

Mourners bid farewell to nurse Debra Moset at Kampung Semadang funeral
Hundreds gathered at St Patrick's Chapel in Kampung Semadang, Padawan, on Monday to pay last respects to Flying Doctor Service nurse Debra Moset, 40, one of five killed in a helicopter crash in Long Lellang last week. Her niece Lizfornia Derik delivered a eulogy calling her a dedicated nurse who served others until the end of her life. Debra leaves behind her husband and two children.

Dr Sim: palliative care awareness must start young

Husband recalls Singapore holiday before Debra Moset died in Long Lellang helicopter crash
The husband of nurse Debra Moset, killed in the Flying Doctor Service helicopter crash in Long Lellang, spoke before her funeral in Kota Padawan on Monday. John Then Hua said the couple had taken a holiday in Singapore a week before the crash, and that she had been looking forward to moving into their new home in Kampung Semadang. Five others died in the crash, including the pilot and a medical officer.
