Foreigner fined RM20,000 for keeping 578kg cooking oil, 250 litres petrol without permit
A 34-year-old foreign national was fined RM20,000, or 12 months' jail in default, by the Sessions Court in Tawau on Friday for possessing controlled goods without a permit. Azmain Same pleaded guilty to holding 578kg of cooking oil and 250 litres of petrol on an unregistered wooden boat in waters off Kalapuan on Sept 6, which he admitted he meant to take to a neighbouring country. He was arrested by a Kunak General Operations Force team and charged under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.

Two men held with syabu at a house in Kampung Mata Kundasang, Ranau
Ranau police arrested two local men, aged 26 and 38, at an unnumbered house in Kampung Mata Kundasang at about 1am on Sept 12 and seized 5.12g of suspected syabu. The case is being probed under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and a four-day remand has been sought for one suspect.

Villagers at Aki Aki Trail want action as foreign hikers keep entering without guides
Villagers managing the Aki Aki Trail in Ranau say foreign tourists keep entering the community trail without permission or guides, sometimes twice a week since 2021. Deputy chairman Hanson Juhili wants tourism authorities to step in before an unauthorised hiker is lost or hurt, after the recent rescue of a Croatian climber who used a village route up Mount Kinabalu.

Man gets six years, two strokes for assaulting underage stepsister
A 22-year-old man was sentenced by the Sessions Court in Kota Kinabalu to six years in jail and two strokes of the cane for sexually assaulting his 14-year-old stepsister. The offence took place in November 2025 in the living room of a house in a village in Papar, and he will also undergo counselling and two years of police supervision after release.

Woman jailed 15 months for false MyKad application
A 40-year-old woman was sentenced to 15 months in jail by the Magistrate's Court in Kota Kinabalu after pleading guilty to giving false information as guarantor for a child's MyKad application. The court heard she used her own biological child's birth certificate for another child at the Tawau NRD in 2023, and had sold that birth certificate to another person.

Filipino man jailed five months for threatening ex-wife in Kota Kinabalu
A 49-year-old Filipino man without valid documents was sentenced to five months in jail and fined RM2,500 by the Magistrate's Court in Kota Kinabalu for threatening to kill his former wife. The offence occurred on May 6 at a house in Kampung Suang Parai, Manggatal, where he had confined the woman for about a month after their child's wedding.

Broker charged with cheating woman of RM81,500 over Tambunan land deal
A 44-year-old freelance broker, Herman Stephen, was charged in the Kota Kinabalu Sessions Court with seven counts of cheating a 66-year-old woman of RM81,500 over a land deal in Kampung Rompon, Tambunan. He pleaded not guilty, was released on RM14,500 bail with two local sureties, and the court fixed Oct 29 for mention. The payments were allegedly made between Nov 23 and Dec 5, 2025 at an apartment in Jalan Sulaman, Manggatal.

Motorcyclist, 22, dies after skidding at Bundusan roundabout
A 22-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash at the 360 Roundabout along Jalan Bundusan in Penampang, Sabah, at about 4.10am on Saturday. Police said the motorcycle went out of control while negotiating the roundabout and skidded, and the rider was pronounced dead at the scene. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Man, 31, held over mother's murder in Tambunan
A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his 56-year-old mother at a rented house in Kampung Katagayan, Tambunan, Sabah, on Friday. Police said the victim died at the scene from injuries believed to have been caused by a sharp weapon, and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Sabah official wants jail for Mount Kinabalu trespassers after climber rescue
A Sabah deputy state secretary, Datuk Jamili Nais, has called for jail sentences for climbers who trespass on Mount Kinabalu via unauthorised routes, after a Croatian climber was rescued in a five-day operation. The climber, Mauro Persic, was brought down to Timpohon Gate and is recovering in hospital. A Native Court judge said Native Laws could also be used against trespassers.

Two held over suspected cable theft in Penampang
Police arrested two local men, aged 20 and 37, suspected of involvement in a cable theft near Kampung Sugud in Penampang early Friday. They were detained by members of the public before being handed to police, and the case is being investigated under Section 431 of the Penal Code.

Prof Charles acquitted of 21 false claim charges over UMS research funds
The Kota Kinabalu Sessions Court today acquitted and discharged Prof Dr Charles Santhanaraju Vairappan of 21 charges of making false claims involving Sabah marine life research funds. Judge Jason Juga ruled the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case after calling 26 witnesses, so the accused did not have to enter his defence. His bail money was returned and his passport handed back.

PM hands RM1,500 special aid to 111 families of Numbak fire victims
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim presented RM1,500 in special federal aid to each of the 111 households affected by the Numbak fire in Kota Kinabalu. The aid was delivered during his visit to the temporary relocation centre at Dewan Serbaguna Damai. The 30 August blaze destroyed 202 houses and killed three children.

Myvi driver arrested after fleeing JPJ check in Kota Kinabalu
A Perodua Myvi driver was detained in Kota Kinabalu after trying to flee a JPJ inspection yesterday. The car was suspected of extreme modifications and the driver in his 20s was found to have committed four offences including expired licence and no insurance.

Two China nationals fined RM1,800 each over fake boarding passes at KKIA
Two Chinese nationals were fined RM1,800 each, or seven months' jail in default, by the Magistrate's Court in Kota Kinabalu for using fake boarding passes to exit the domestic arrival hall at Kota Kinabalu International Airport. Wei Zhan and Nong Chunzhao pleaded guilty to using forged AirAsia and Batik Air Malaysia e-boarding passes for a Tawau-Kota Kinabalu route on Sept 2, with checks showing they were not recorded as passengers on those flights.

An undocumented man was sentenced by the Sessions Court in Kota Kinabalu to 17 years in jail and five strokes of the cane for gang robbery. Musa Normani, 32, was found guilty of robbing an e-hailing driver of an iPhone 11 at knifepoint at a Chinese cemetery at Mile 5, Jalan Tuaran, on Aug 2, 2025.

43 rescuers bring down Croatian climber injured on Mount Kinabalu
A Croatian climber, Mauro Persic, 46, fell while climbing Mount Kinabalu and suffered injuries to his right leg and ribs. A five-day search and rescue operation involving 43 personnel from JBPM, PDRM, APM and Sabah Park brought him down via Timpohon Gate before he was sent to Ranau Hospital.

Document examiner stands by findings on Zara Qairina's handwriting at Sabah inquest
At the Coroner's Court in Kota Kinabalu on Thursday, document examiner Nurul Atiqah Mohd Noh maintained that her conclusion the questioned writings belonged to the late Zara Qairina Mahathir is unchanged, even after hearing the testimony of another forensic handwriting expert, Dr Linthini Gannetion. She said minor scribbles, amendments and different writing instruments do not overturn the finding, and that another expert's inability to conclude does not mean someone else wrote them. The inquest into the 13-year-old student's death resumes in October.

Labourer gets nine months for disposing of stolen Proton rims in Penampang
A 29-year-old labourer was jailed nine months by the Magistrate's Court in Kota Kinabalu after pleading guilty to helping dispose of three stolen Proton Saga rims worth RM300. The rims were taken from a roadside along the Pan Borneo Highway at Kampung Mansiang in Manggatal, and the man led police to a scrap metal shop in Penampang where they were sold. In a separate case, a woman was fined RM2,000 for failing to comply with a Consumer Claims Tribunal award.

BMW seized in Tuaran over expired licence and road tax
A BMW was seized at Jalan Lintas-Inanam in Tuaran during a JPJ Sabah patrol on Tuesday after the driver was found without a valid Competent Driving Licence and the vehicle's Motor Vehicle Licence had expired. The car was taken to the Telipok Enforcement Station, and summonses were issued to both the driver and the owner.

Ten Vietnamese women were fined by the Sessions Court in Kota Kinabalu for various immigration offences. Five were fined RM4,000 each for entering Malaysia without valid documents, while the others were fined for overstaying or having irregular passes. Psychiatrist defends diary assessment in Zara Qairina inquest
At the Coroner's Court in Kota Kinabalu, forensic psychiatrist Dr Chua Sze Hung testified that he also considered positive aspects in the diary of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. He explained that numerical scoring is not helpful in psychological assessment and stressed the importance of understanding contextual details. Dr Chua also acknowledged that it is impossible to eliminate 100 percent of bias in witness testimony.

Fire destroys non-permanent house in Kampung Contoh Petagas, Putatan
A non-permanent house at Kampung Contoh Petagas in Putatan was destroyed in an early morning fire on Wednesday. The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department received the alert at 4.56am and brought the blaze under control within six minutes. No casualties were reported.
