Malaysia, Indonesia mark 70 years of diplomatic ties in 2027
Malaysia's embassy in Jakarta held a Malaysia Day reception on Tuesday night, with Charge d'Affaires Farzamie Sarkawi highlighting the close ties between the two countries ahead of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027. Bilateral trade reached US$34.22 billion in 2025 and over 2.63 million Malaysian tourists visited Indonesia last year.

ASEAN must deliver results, not just frameworks, says secretary-general
ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn told the Third ASEAN Think Tanks Summit in Jakarta that the bloc must move from building frameworks to delivering tangible outcomes for its people and businesses. He pointed to existing mechanisms such as the ASEAN Power Grid and the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve, and said the test of ASEAN's centrality will be what its institutions achieve as it nears its 60th anniversary in 2027.

ASEAN risks losing relevance as smaller groupings grow, Kao warns
ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn warned in Jakarta on Sept 14 that the grouping risks being sidelined as countries turn to smaller security partnerships across the Indo-Pacific. Speaking at the third ASEAN Think Tanks Summit, he said ASEAN must make better use of existing forums such as the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN Regional Forum. The issue gains weight as Singapore takes over the ASEAN chair in 2027, the grouping's 60th anniversary.

Malaysia begin their FIFA Asean Cup Group A campaign against Bangladesh at Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta on Sept 25, facing a side coached by former Sri Pahang boss Thomas Dooley. Only group winners go straight to the Oct 5 final, and Malaysia also meet Indonesia in Jakarta on Sept 28 and Singapore in Bandung on Oct 1.

Harimau Malaya to open FIFA Asean Cup against Bangladesh in Jakarta
Malaysia will face guest side Bangladesh in their opening match of the inaugural FIFA Asean Cup's Premier Division in Jakarta on Sept 25. The 14-team tournament features 11 Asean countries plus Bangladesh, Pakistan and Hong Kong, split into Premier and Challenge divisions, with Indonesia hosting the Premier Division and Hong Kong hosting the Challenge Division.
