Pahang Fisheries sends samples of suspected piranha from Klau Dam to research institute
The Pahang Fisheries Department has sent video and photos of a fish claimed to be a red-bellied piranha found at Klau Dam in Raub to the Fisheries Research Institute in Glami Lemi, Negeri Sembilan, to confirm the species. Investigations found the fish was netted by a local on Aug 26 and died before being discarded, with no similar catches reported since. The public has been advised not to speculate until the species is confirmed.

FOS'26 at PSAS brings STEM, TVET closer to the public
The STEM Festival 2026 (FOS'26) closed at Politeknik Sultan Azlan Shah in Behrang with over 400 participants taking part in activities to spark interest in STEM. Perak education exco Datuk Khairuddin Abu Hanifah said the programme is key to producing highly skilled human capital, and TVET should not be seen as a last resort. Polytechnic and Community College Education director Dr Shamsuri Abdullah said 32,000 applications were received for the 2026/2027 session against 24,000 places offered.

Two FELDA retirees in Sungkai grow chillies commercially
Two FELDA retirees in FELDA Jaya Trolak, Sungkai, have been growing chillies commercially under fertigation for five years as post-retirement income. The 2,500-plant project on 0.5 hectares receives fertiliser, coco peat and pesticide aid from the Perak Agriculture Department.

UPSI expands Kadazandusun, Iban and Semai as degree majors
Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjong Malim, Perak, became the first Malaysian higher education institution to offer tertiary programmes in Kadazandusun and Iban in 2010, and in 2024 expanded these plus Semai into majors under its Bachelor of Education. Lecturers Julita Norjietta Taisin and Saripah Anak Banseng say a shortage of trained teachers and dwindling daily use threaten the languages, and that more learning materials and digital content are needed.

14 trapped by flash flood in Sungai Pertak rescued by firemen
Fourteen people, including a child, were trapped in the middle of Sungai Pertak in Kuala Kubu Bharu after a flash flood yesterday. Fire and rescue personnel from Kuala Kubu Bharu, assisted by the Batang Kali volunteer fire squad, used a river crossing technique to bring all victims safely to the riverbank.

Two teens trapped by flash flood at Sungai Bill, Slim River, rescued
Two 17-year-old boys were trapped across Sungai Bill in Slim River, Tanjung Malim, after a flash flood around 5.03pm. Fire and Rescue Department personnel from Perak located them and guided them out through a forest path before handing them to police.

Batu Pahat council steps up stray dog catch after child attacked in Peserai
Batu Pahat Municipal Council is intensifying its stray dog catching operations after a two-year-old girl was attacked by five stray dogs in Kampung Tambak, Peserai, on 5 September. The council has caught 736 stray dogs in 205 operations up to 31 August this year, following 1,557 caught last year. It is also drafting a 2027-2031 Stray Animal Control Action Plan.

Fisheries Dept probes claim red-bellied piranha caught at Klau Dam, Raub
Pahang's Fisheries Department is investigating a fisherman's claim that he landed a red-bellied piranha at Klau Dam in Raub. Officers will visit the site this week to verify the presence of the invasive species, which is banned in Malaysia. Concerns were raised by a freshwater life monitoring group that the fish may have been released irresponsibly and could breed there.

Motorcyclist killed after being run over by lorry on Batang Kali-Ulu Yam road
A 60-year-old motorcyclist died after being run over by a lorry on Jalan Batang Kali-Ulu Yam in Hulu Selangor at about 7pm. The victim is believed to have swerved to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road before losing control and falling. Police are investigating under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

A new UPSI student was stranded in Batang Kali, Selangor after her family's vehicle broke down on the way to Tanjung Malim for registration. UPSI sent a team to help, repaired the vehicle, provided accommodation and dinner, and gave RM2,232.35 in semester aid plus RM500 in alms.

Eight Malayan tiger cubs born under MPOGCF-Perhilitan programme
Eight Malayan tiger cubs were born to one female between 2023 and 2025 under a conservation programme run by MPOGCF and Perhilitan, with the births recorded at the National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Sungkai, Perak. MPOGCF has spent RM2 million since 2021 on ex-situ breeding, research and training, and a new MoU with FELDA is being finalised.

Foreign man dies in Rasa brawl, six suspects held
A foreign man in his 40s died in a fight involving seven foreigners in the Rasa area of Hulu Selangor last night. Police arrested six suspects aged 30 to 50 and remanded them for seven days until Sept 16; the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

High Court in Tapah orders Perak exco Sivanesan to pay RM3,000 costs in defamation suit
The High Court in Tapah ordered Perak executive councillor A. Sivanesan to pay RM3,000 in costs after allowing former Bagan Dalam assemblyman Satees Muniandy's application to transfer the defamation suit to the Butterworth Sessions Court. Sivanesan sued Satees over a TikTok video uploaded in June last year that he says portrayed him as unfit for public office.

First azan and recitation contest for Orang Asli children in Pos Lenjang
Thirty-five V1M volunteers visited the Semai Orang Asli community in Pos Lenjang, Kuala Lipis, Pahang on 31 August and 1 September. For the first time an azan and Quran recitation contest was held for children from the area's 18 villages, alongside food baskets and clothing.

Aliman Zafran Yuslaimi, 23, from Subang, Selangor, started by repairing an old motorcycle engine at his family's oil palm estate in Kampung Serigala, Hulu Bernam. He now captains the Putra Motorsport Team from Universiti Putra Malaysia, which competed at Formula SAE Japan 2026 in Aichi, Japan, last August.
