MGA: Gas still vital in energy transition, demand expected to rise

Malaysian Gas Association (MGA) president Abang Yusuf Abang Puteh said the energy transition will not eliminate the need for natural gas, with demand projected to rise from 41 MTOE to 57 MTOE by 2050. He stressed the need for comprehensive gas and LNG infrastructure to ensure supply security, while acknowledging that greater LNG reliance exposes Malaysia to international price fluctuations. He spoke during a panel session at the Oil and Gas Asia 2026 conference in Kuala Lumpur.
