Asian Games open in Japan with Qatar beating Iran in basketball

The Asian Games began in Nagoya, Japan on Thursday with Qatar defeating Iran 59-53 in the opening men's basketball match at Aichi International Arena. More than 17,000 athletes will compete in 43 sports before the official opening ceremony on September 19, with several events starting early. Record rainfall earlier in the week forced hundreds of athletes to briefly evacuate their accommodation.
