New Kollidam barrage cannot store Cauvery water over missing green clearance

A new barrage built across the Kollidam river near Kumaramangalam at a cost of Rs 516 crore cannot store surplus Cauvery water because it was built without prior environmental clearance from India's environment ministry. Construction finished in January but the clearance application was only filed in December 2024, leaving the structure idle. Delta farmers and environmentalists are worried.
