Indonesia expects extreme drought to persist until the end of September, with more than 5,000 hotspots nationwide. Rainfall in major palm oil areas such as Sumatra and Kalimantan has been only a fifth of normal, raising water shortage and crop failure risks and complicating fire and haze response.
