Himalayan flash flood kills 1,420, scientists trace cause to glacier collapse
A flash flood at the Nepal-Tibet border on 26 August 2026 killed 1,420 people as of 11 September. Studies found the magnitude 5.2 tremor came from a rock and ice avalanche near Langtang Lirung, not an earthquake. The wave of water, ice and boulders travelled 22 km at an average 193 km/h, leaving downstream residents little time to escape.
