Sarawak strengthens innovation ecosystem through SHInE 2026
In Kuching, Sarawak is strengthening its research and innovation ecosystem through the SHInE 2026 conference held from 9 to 11 September at Imperial Hotel Kuching. Organising chairman Dr Peter Morin Nissom said SRDC aims to move Sarawak from being a technology user to a creator and owner of intellectual property. Sarawak's geographical challenges were also discussed in ensuring equitable access to science and healthcare.

Hari Malaysia 2026 exhibition at Plaza Merdeka Kuching
The Hari Malaysia 2026 exhibition is being held at the Main Atrium of Plaza Merdeka, Kuching from 10 to 16 September, presenting the history of Malaysia's formation through the Corridor of the Era of Malaysia's Formation concept. Sarawak Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department Datuk Abdullah Saidol and Sarawak JAPEN director Sabri Said visited the exhibition. Mini exhibitions are also being held in 10 divisions in Sarawak as well as in Sabah and Putrajaya.

Abang Johari: Haze cooperation with neighbours handled via Asean, diplomacy
Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg said cooperation with neighbouring countries on transboundary haze is being handled through Asean mechanisms and diplomatic channels. He spoke in Kuching after launching the Sarawak SHInE International Conference, as Sarawak continues to experience haze linked to fires in Indonesia. Serian, Kuching, Samarahan and Sri Aman have been worst hit, with schools closed and a brief state of emergency declared in Serian from Sept 4-7.

Abang Johari: Sarawak to study biodiversity for regenerative medicine research
Sarawak is exploring its biodiversity as a source for regenerative medicine research, Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg said after launching the Sarawak SHInE International Conference 2026 in Kuching on Thursday. He has asked medical research experts to study whether bio-based cells from the state's forests could help treat diseases such as cancer, and called for collaboration with outside talent, citing Singapore's research strength.

Batu Kitang gets over 1,200 streetlights since 2016, says assemblyman
More than 1,200 streetlights have been installed across Batu Kitang since 2016 to improve security in back lanes and housing estates, assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang said. Six CCTV cameras have also been fitted along Arang Road and in the Third Mile area. A community dialogue on security and infrastructure will be held at Choon Foh Kopitiam, Capital Garden, this Saturday.

Kuching gourmet group, Chef Muluk to publish halal Sarawak recipe book
A Kuching food association and Sarawak chef Abdul Muluk Rambli signed an MoU to produce a Halal Sarawak Cuisine Recipe Book documenting traditional recipes and indigenous ingredients. The signing took place at the association's third anniversary Rainforest Empurau Charity Night in Kuching.

Dr Sim: Chefs representing Kuching abroad must uphold Unesco gastronomy standards
KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said chefs and culinary groups representing Kuching overseas must maintain high standards to protect the city's reputation as a Unesco Creative City of Gastronomy. Speaking at the Persatuan Peminat Gourmet Kuching third anniversary Rainforest Empurau Charity Night on Wednesday, he stressed that representation involves heritage, local ingredients, communities, creativity and sustainability.

Lien Heng Cup lion dance championship returns to Kuching Sept 26-27 with RM25,500 prize pool
The Lien Heng Cup-Lien Heng Lion Dance Open Championship 2026 will be held on Sept 26 and 27 at The Hills in Kuching, offering RM25,500 in prizes including RM8,000 for the champion. Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said at least 23 teams from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore are expected, with organisers targeting 30. A 'Lion Spirit' photography competition with professional camera, mobile phone and short video categories will run alongside.

Bau District Police Headquarters is intensifying regular crime prevention patrols around the Bau district in Sarawak. Last night's patrol covered Bandar Bau, housing areas, Pekan Jambusan and surrounding villages, with checks on individuals and vehicles. The Bau police chief said the visible presence of officers aims to prevent crime and strengthen police-community ties.

The Kuching Intercultural Mooncake Festival 2026 will run at Carpenter Street from Sept 15 to 26, with more than 100 vendors expected for the 12-day celebration. Organising chairman Kapitan Lim Chuan Chan said the festival will be officially launched on Sept 15 by Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Sarawak Metro held a hands-on STEM laboratory activity in Kuching for pupils from seven primary schools, introducing them to hydrogen energy and electrolysis. The programme is part of its Socio-Economic Enhancement Development initiative to build early interest in science and technology.
