310 cable theft and telecom vandalism cases reported in Perak
Perak recorded 310 cable theft and telecommunications network vandalism cases from January to June this year, with Kinta district reporting the most. State communications committee chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi said 125 cases have been charged in court and 67 investigation papers opened, while a state telecommunications security committee has been formed with MCMC, police and the state legal adviser. A community awareness programme will be held on 28 September in Kinta.

SPA fills over 1,000 of 1,400 nursing vacancies in public service
The Public Service Commission has filled more than 1,000 of the 1,400 nursing vacancies in the public service, using open interviews and walk-ins to speed up hiring. Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Jailani Muhamed Yunus said the effort is ongoing and several hundred posts remain, with Public Health Assistants also a priority. He spoke in Kuala Kangsar after officiating the SPA MADANI Adopted Village Project handover at Kampung Orang Asli Ulu Chenein.

SPA denies blocking walk-in nurses from leaving after contract ends
Public Services Commission chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Jailani Muhamed Yunus said no restrictions are imposed on nurses hired through walk-in interviews who want to move to the private sector or work abroad once their contracts end. He said SPA's focus is now on a replacement plan to recruit new staff. He spoke after officiating the Pemimpin Bersama Rakyat programme and the SPA MADANI 2026 adopted-village project handover at Kampung Orang Asli Ulu Chenein, Sungai Siput.

Left lane at KM263.6 southbound reopens after slope declared safe
The left lane at KM263.6 of the North-South Expressway southbound, about two kilometres after the Menora Tunnel, reopened to all vehicles from 1pm today after the slope was declared safe. Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said repair work on the slope will continue. A landslide occurred at 4.30pm yesterday during heavy rain, forcing the lane to be closed temporarily.

Michelle Ng second in MY50 at UTMB Taiping trail race
Michelle Ng Qian Ying, 28, finished second in the women's MY50 category at the Malaysia Ultra-Trail by UTMB in Taiping, completing the 50km race in 7 hours 29 minutes 38 seconds. China's Wang Da Yu won and Hong Kong's Li Sham Ming was third. Michelle said an ankle injury a week before the race did not stop her from reaching the podium.

Expert calls for regular checks on risky highway slopes
A tropical geotechnical expert has called for regular and more frequent inspections of risky slopes along hilly highways to reduce the risk of landslides. He was commenting on a slope collapse at KM 263.6 of the North-South Expressway southbound from the Menora Tunnel to Ipoh, which blocked the left lane and caused a 15-kilometre traffic jam. All lanes have since reopened.

A landslide occurred at KM263.6 of the North-South Expressway southbound, about 2km past the Menora Tunnel, yesterday afternoon. The left lane was temporarily closed and all lanes were reopened to motorists at 7pm after clean-up works. No injuries or property damage were reported, and PLUS Malaysia and authorities are monitoring the slope.

Raintown Film Festival in Taiping draws 152 entries, Agnes Yap wins top prize
The third Raintown Film Festival at Paragon, Taiping, received 152 short film submissions, up nearly 48 per cent from 2025. Agnes Yap Jen Nie won the RM8,000 Grand Prize for her nine-minute documentary 'Daughter of the Last Journey', shot in Sungai Petani, Kedah. The festival also launched a tertiary filmmaking sandbox with IACT College.

The left lane at KM 263.6 of the North-South Expressway southbound has been closed after a landslide near the Menora Tunnel heading towards Ipoh. Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the closure is a precaution, with safety cones placed from KM 262.8 to KM 263.8 and CCTV and PLUS monitoring ongoing.

Kuala Kangsar Bersatu deputy chief, eight branch leaders quit party
Kuala Kangsar Bersatu division deputy chief Datuk Adly Shah Ahmad Tah and eight of the division's 11 branch leaders announced they are resigning from all party posts and leaving Bersatu. Adly Shah said the decision was made after considering the political struggle and future of Kuala Kangsar residents. The division now has only three of its 11 branches left, and more than 100 members showed up to support the move.

Perak denies claim Taiping Hospital has no graduate medical officers

A 38-year-old man who went missing while trying to save his drifting boat in Sungai Perak has been found dead. Ahmad Zaki Elias's body was found floating about four kilometres from the scene by the Perak Fire and Rescue Department's water rescue team.

A caterer serving a boarding school in Lenggong, Perak has been ordered to close after 159 students and staff developed symptoms of suspected food poisoning. The Hulu Perak District Health Office inspected the premises and ordered the closure under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

Pulau Burung landfill in Nibong Tebal catches fire again
A fire broke out at the Pulau Burung solid waste landfill in Nibong Tebal, Penang, late last night. The blaze covered an area of about 36 metres by 27 metres and was brought under control at 12.30am before being fully extinguished around 5am. Seventeen firefighters from four stations were involved, and no casualties were reported.

Sumpitan village clinic and quarters destroyed in Lenggong fire
A village clinic building and a quarters in Kampung Sumpitan near Lenggong, Perak were destroyed in an early morning fire. The Perak Fire and Rescue Department received the emergency call at 4.04am and the blaze was fully extinguished by 6.24am. No victims were reported, but a Proton Preve car was also damaged.

Perak: residents' associations need approval before hiring security guards

Man found bound in septic tank, five remanded four days
In Nibong Tebal, Penang, the body of a man in his 50s was found with hands and feet bound inside a septic tank behind a terrace house in Taman Seri Bistari. Five individuals including a woman were remanded for four days starting today by Magistrate J Savinder Singh in Bukit Mertajam under Section 365 of the Penal Code. RM30,000 in cash was allegedly transferred from the victim's bank account to a grocery shop in Sungai Bakap before the incident was reported.
