Phoong wants noise control zones in Kota Kinabalu
Senator Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe has asked the Sabah government to create designated Noise Control Zones in densely populated urban areas of Kota Kinabalu after complaints about a recent large motorcycle gathering. He said events like Sabah Moto Day 9.0 should not be held near housing areas if they disturb residents, and proposed that City Hall and other local authorities be given stronger powers to vet major event applications.

245 of 416 dilapidated Sabah schools rebuilt, 63 under construction
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said 245 of the 416 dilapidated schools identified for full replacement in Sabah have been completed, with 63 still under construction. Armizan: Sabah-Federal cooperation vital to fix infrastructure in Papar

Federal government agrees to raise Sabah, Sarawak parliamentary seats
The MTPMA63 meeting in Kota Kinabalu decided that the ratio of Sabah and Sarawak parliamentary seats will be increased from the current position. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said a constitutional amendment is needed and the mechanism and final ratio have yet to be detailed. Sabah currently has 25 seats and Sarawak 31, making 56 of the 222 Dewan Rakyat seats.

UMS offers 6,171 undergraduate places for 2026/2027 session
Universiti Malaysia Sabah has offered 6,171 undergraduate places for the 2026/2027 session, with registration starting today. A total of 5,251 students registered at the Kota Kinabalu campus, 698 at the Labuan international campus and 222 at the Sandakan campus. The intake includes 3,380 B40 students, 14 disabled students, eight Orang Asli, 15 athletes and 215 international students from 12 countries.

Man gets six years, two strokes for assaulting underage stepsister

Woman jailed 15 months for false MyKad application
A 40-year-old woman was sentenced to 15 months in jail by the Magistrate's Court in Kota Kinabalu after pleading guilty to giving false information as guarantor for a child's MyKad application. The court heard she used her own biological child's birth certificate for another child at the Tawau NRD in 2023, and had sold that birth certificate to another person.

The Malaysian Headteachers' Association (PGBM) Sabah Branch has proposed publishing a biographical book on Sabah Head of State Tun Musa Aman, aimed at school pupils. The proposal was discussed during a courtesy call at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Thursday, which also covered education in Sabah. Army and MIC Sabah delegations also made courtesy calls on the same day.

5,000 acres in Beaufort proposed as paddy granary
A 5,000-acre area stretching from Kampung Indomadi to Kampung Sungai Padas in Beaufort, Sabah has been proposed for gazettement as a paddy granary. Sabah Assistant Agriculture Minister Datuk Ruslan Muharam said the area could be developed with modern farming methods to raise rice output and strengthen Sabah's food security. He also inspected a 500-acre site in Kampung Indomadi proposed as a sago palm area.

Police seize RM785,263.50 in liquor, arrest eight in Beaufort smuggling bust
Police in Beaufort, Sabah busted a liquor smuggling syndicate, seizing 650 cartons of liquor worth RM785,263.50 and arresting eight people. Three lorries were also seized in the operation, which involved the Bukit Aman Wildlife Crime/Intelligence Special Investigation Bureau and the Beaufort Criminal Investigation Division. The syndicate is believed to have used river channels around Menumbok and Kuala Penyu to evade authorities.

Motorcyclist, 22, dies after skidding at Bundusan roundabout
A 22-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash at the 360 Roundabout along Jalan Bundusan in Penampang, Sabah, at about 4.10am on Saturday. Police said the motorcycle went out of control while negotiating the roundabout and skidded, and the rider was pronounced dead at the scene. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Kota Marudu pupil Lara Alexander wins national taekwondo gold
Lara Andria Alexander, a pupil of Sekolah Rendah Advent Goshen in Kota Marudu, won the Under-10 sparring category at the SSTA National Open Invitational Taekwondo Championship 2026. The championship was held at the Inland Revenue Board premises in Kota Kinabalu, where she represented Redskyfe Taekwondo Kota Marudu.

Sarawak is pushing for a special recruitment exercise to fill 5,654 vacant posts in its Health Department, about 18 per cent of the workforce. Two held over suspected cable theft in Penampang
Police arrested two local men, aged 20 and 37, suspected of involvement in a cable theft near Kampung Sugud in Penampang early Friday. They were detained by members of the public before being handed to police, and the case is being investigated under Section 431 of the Penal Code.
