LTA: North-South Corridor works hit hard rock and water seepage at Novena, Thomson
Singapore's Land Transport Authority said tunnelling for the North-South Corridor has run into unexpected ground conditions at Novena and Thomson, including hard rock and underground water seepage. At Novena crews are digging the northbound tunnel section by section just 1m below the operating North-South MRT line, while in Thomson harder rock was found about 10m closer to the surface than expected. LTA said it is monitoring progress and will update the completion timeline later; the corridor was previously slated to open in phases from 2027.

Hong Kong principal sues school over sacking after Jurong guard row
A Hong Kong secondary school principal who was filmed shouting at security guards in Jurong on May 22 is suing his former school for wrongful termination. Lee Cheuk-hing, formerly of San Wui Commercial Society Secondary School in Tuen Mun, is seeking about HK$902,867 after the school dismissed him with immediate effect instead of accepting his resignation. The case is due to go on trial in December.

North Korea fires short-range ballistic missiles from Wonsan area
North Korea launched several short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area toward the sea off its east coast early Saturday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The missiles flew about 250km and were tracked by South Korean and US authorities, who shared information with Japan. Seoul convened an emergency security meeting and urged Pyongyang to stop the launches, calling them a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

Saleha Rashidi, manager of Rise Above Transitional House at 1 St George's Lane, Singapore, received a Merit Award at the Social Service Professionals Awards 2026 on 11 September. A new book, Remembering Syonan: 80 Objects From Occupied Singapore, tells the story of everyday life under the Japanese Occupation through personal artefacts such as labour identity booklets, ration cards and Sook Ching documents. It is co-authored by collectors Benjamin Seet and Dominic Tan and will be launched at the National Library on Sept 12, 81 years after the formal Japanese surrender.

Indonesian crew member jailed eight weeks for smuggling ivory tusk into Singapore
A 30-year-old Indonesian ship crew member, Hafiludin, was sentenced to eight weeks' jail in Singapore on Thursday after he was caught bringing a 550g elephant ivory tusk into the country. He had hidden the tusk in a thermos flask and was stopped during an X-ray screening at the Keppel Entrance Crew office on Aug 9. He had bought the tusk from a merchant in Lagos, Nigeria, for US$150 and lacked the required permits.
