Boat, 80kg of fish suspected caught with explosives seized off Pulau Mengalum
Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency seized a boat and about 80 kilograms of fish believed caught using explosives southwest of Pulau Mengalum, Sabah, yesterday. The crew fled to shore, and the RM45,000 seizure was taken to the Sepanggar Maritime Jetty for investigation under the Fisheries Act 1985.

Two charged in Kepayan with trafficking 1.4kg of syabu
Two men, including an undocumented immigrant, pleaded not guilty at the High Court in Kota Kinabalu to trafficking 1,418.1g of syabu at a car park in Lorong Pusat Komersil 88, Kepayan, on May 11. A babysitter also claimed trial at the Sessions Court to allowing another person to control a bank account registered in her name in Penampang.

Undocumented man denies impersonating Immigration officer, extorting RM1,500 in Penampang
An undocumented immigrant, Ratno William Foo, claimed trial at the Kota Kinabalu Magistrate's Court to four charges, including impersonating an Immigration enforcement officer and extorting RM1,500 from a passport holder. The alleged offences took place at a house in Kampung Koidupan Sugud, Penampang, early on Aug 28. The court fixed Oct 15 for mention and ordered him remanded.

Wife tells Sabah corruption court she knew of RM275,550 deposits
In the Special Corruption Court in Kota Kinabalu, the first wife of former Sabah Railway Department chief engineer Ismail Ahmad testified that she knew about RM275,550 deposited into their joint HSBC account in 2016 but denied the money came from unlawful sources. Muhilim @ Masniah Buaya also admitted signing RM900,000 in personal loan agreements and failing to declare at least 10 properties to Yayasan Sabah.

Peak Vista residents hire lawyer over Sabah MotoDay 9.0 exhaust noise
Residents of Peak Vista in Kota Kinabalu have engaged law firm Khian Chong and Partners to seek accountability over excessive motorcycle exhaust noise during Sabah MotoDay 9.0, held on Sept 12 and 13. The firm is inviting other affected communities in Kota Kinabalu to join the initiative, which seeks assurance that large-scale motoring events will not be held near residential areas and consistent enforcement of existing laws.

Businesswoman fined RM20,000 for tampering with SE meter at Penampang store
A 40-year-old businesswoman was fined RM20,000 by the Sessions Court in Kota Kinabalu after pleading guilty to tampering with a Sabah Electricity meter at her grocery store in Penampang. The court heard a bypass cable was found behind the meter, causing RM10,648.02 in revenue losses between October 2024 and January this year.

Teacher dies after pickup crashes into seven vehicles at Kota Kinabalu traffic lights
A teacher was killed after the Toyota Hilux he was driving skidded and crashed into seven vehicles near a traffic light junction on Jalan Kolam, Kota Kinabalu, at about 6am. The victim, Arizal Wahid, 43, was on his way to SK Sembulan and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are seeking witnesses to contact the investigating officer.

German man gets 12 months' jail in Kota Kinabalu for illegal entry and obstructing immigration officer
A 40-year-old German national, Kuecuekboga Suleyman, was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment by the Sessions Court in Kota Kinabalu on two counts of entering Sabah illegally and obstructing an immigration officer. He changed his plea to guilty midway through his trial, receiving six months' jail for each charge, to run consecutively from the date of conviction.

Defendants in KSSA suit move to bar Ram Singh from acting for himself
In Kota Kinabalu, a group of defendants in a civil suit involving the Kinabalu Singh Sabha Association Sabah have applied to the High Court to stop plaintiff Datuk Ram Singh from representing himself as an advocate and solicitor. They also want his firm, Messrs Ram Singh & Co, removed, citing a conflict of interest because Ram is both a party and a material witness. The application was filed on Aug 28.

Malanjum: Putrajaya must share Sabah's illegal immigrant burden
At the State Library in Kota Kinabalu, former Chief Justice Tun Richard Malanjum launched a book on undocumented migrants in Sabah and called for federal political will to resettle eligible migrants across Malaysia rather than concentrating them in Sabah. He said Sabah has carried the burden of a federal-era project alone for half a century and that sharing it is what a federation is for.

Armed robbery at Dengkil grocery shop; two arrested, one at large
Three machete-wielding robbers held up a grocery shop in Taman Delux, Dengkil, Sepang, at 12.24am on 9 December, escaping with cash from the register. Police arrested two suspects and are hunting a third, investigating under Sections 395/397 of the Penal Code.

Phoong wants noise control zones in Kota Kinabalu
Senator Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe has asked the Sabah government to create designated Noise Control Zones in densely populated urban areas of Kota Kinabalu after complaints about a recent large motorcycle gathering. He said events like Sabah Moto Day 9.0 should not be held near housing areas if they disturb residents, and proposed that City Hall and other local authorities be given stronger powers to vet major event applications.

Hajiji: Public roads not for racing, use proper platforms
Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor reminded motoring enthusiasts that public roads must not be treated as racing circuits, urging discipline and respect for other road users. His speech was read by state minister Datuk James Ratib at the Youth Motoring Programme (Sabah Moto Day 9.0) at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex grounds, which drew participants from Sabah, Sarawak, the peninsula and Brunei.

Woman jailed 15 months for false MyKad application
A 40-year-old woman was sentenced to 15 months in jail by the Magistrate's Court in Kota Kinabalu after pleading guilty to giving false information as guarantor for a child's MyKad application. The court heard she used her own biological child's birth certificate for another child at the Tawau NRD in 2023, and had sold that birth certificate to another person.

Motorcyclist, 22, dies after skidding at Bundusan roundabout
A 22-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash at the 360 Roundabout along Jalan Bundusan in Penampang, Sabah, at about 4.10am on Saturday. Police said the motorcycle went out of control while negotiating the roundabout and skidded, and the rider was pronounced dead at the scene. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Prof Charles acquitted of 21 false claim charges over UMS research funds
The Kota Kinabalu Sessions Court today acquitted and discharged Prof Dr Charles Santhanaraju Vairappan of 21 charges of making false claims involving Sabah marine life research funds. Judge Jason Juga ruled the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case after calling 26 witnesses, so the accused did not have to enter his defence. His bail money was returned and his passport handed back.

Myvi driver arrested after fleeing JPJ check in Kota Kinabalu
A Perodua Myvi driver was detained in Kota Kinabalu after trying to flee a JPJ inspection yesterday. The car was suspected of extreme modifications and the driver in his 20s was found to have committed four offences including expired licence and no insurance.

Two China nationals fined RM1,800 each over fake boarding passes at KKIA
Two Chinese nationals were fined RM1,800 each, or seven months' jail in default, by the Magistrate's Court in Kota Kinabalu for using fake boarding passes to exit the domestic arrival hall at Kota Kinabalu International Airport. Wei Zhan and Nong Chunzhao pleaded guilty to using forged AirAsia and Batik Air Malaysia e-boarding passes for a Tawau-Kota Kinabalu route on Sept 2, with checks showing they were not recorded as passengers on those flights.

Document examiner stands by findings on Zara Qairina's handwriting at Sabah inquest
At the Coroner's Court in Kota Kinabalu on Thursday, document examiner Nurul Atiqah Mohd Noh maintained that her conclusion the questioned writings belonged to the late Zara Qairina Mahathir is unchanged, even after hearing the testimony of another forensic handwriting expert, Dr Linthini Gannetion. She said minor scribbles, amendments and different writing instruments do not overturn the finding, and that another expert's inability to conclude does not mean someone else wrote them. The inquest into the 13-year-old student's death resumes in October.

Labourer gets nine months for disposing of stolen Proton rims in Penampang
A 29-year-old labourer was jailed nine months by the Magistrate's Court in Kota Kinabalu after pleading guilty to helping dispose of three stolen Proton Saga rims worth RM300. The rims were taken from a roadside along the Pan Borneo Highway at Kampung Mansiang in Manggatal, and the man led police to a scrap metal shop in Penampang where they were sold. In a separate case, a woman was fined RM2,000 for failing to comply with a Consumer Claims Tribunal award.

Ten Vietnamese women fined in Kota Kinabalu court for immigration offences
Ten Vietnamese women were fined by the Sessions Court in Kota Kinabalu for various immigration offences. Five were fined RM4,000 each for entering Malaysia without valid documents, while the others were fined for overstaying or having irregular passes. All were ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department after settling their fines or serving their jail terms.

Psychiatrist defends diary assessment in Zara Qairina inquest
At the Coroner's Court in Kota Kinabalu, forensic psychiatrist Dr Chua Sze Hung testified that he also considered positive aspects in the diary of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. He explained that numerical scoring is not helpful in psychological assessment and stressed the importance of understanding contextual details. Dr Chua also acknowledged that it is impossible to eliminate 100 percent of bias in witness testimony.
