UNIMAS brings medical expertise to Kampung Bijuray Mogag, Bau
UNIMAS wants its knowledge and medical expertise to be felt directly by communities, not just through academic excellence. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit said this at the KHUAM KPT Prihatin Madani programme at Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Bijuray Mogag, Bau, today. The programme also involved UNIMAS Teaching Hospital and the Consortium of Malaysian Public University Hospitals.

SK Ulu Yong gets RM10,000 grant, water pump pledged
SK Ulu Yong in Kapit received a RM10,000 grant announced by Datuk Jefferson Jamit anak Unyat at the school's JIWA@Hari Kebangsaan Hari Malaysia 2026 programme. He also pledged help to buy a water pump for the school's supply problems and urged support for the 1 House 1 Jalur Gemilang campaign.

UTM pushes experiential learning to prepare graduates for industry
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is emphasising an experiential learning approach to prepare graduates for real industry challenges. Its Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Mohd Syahrizal Sunar, said students are exposed to solving real problems through university-industry cooperation and government agencies, including the UTM Robocon and UTM Rocketry projects. He said the ASCEND 2030 plan aims to develop global talent with strong leadership values and employability.

Singapore 15-year-olds top PISA 2025 reading, second in maths and science
Singapore's 15-year-old students ranked first in the world for reading and second for mathematics and science in the 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). They also scored 563 points in the new computational problem-solving component, well above the international average of 500. The OECD-run test, held every three years, covered 91 countries and regions and over 760,000 students.

UniMAP hosts first royal commissioning parade for PALAPES cadets
Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) is hosting the 44th Royal Commissioning Ceremony for PALAPES cadet officers in Arau, Perlis. Nearly 2,000 cadets from 20 public universities will be commissioned before about 4,000 attendees. The Raja Muda of Perlis will officiate.

MICPA recognises KPTM Bangi Diploma in Accounting
Kolej Poly-Tech Mara's Diploma in Accounting has been recognised by the Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants, opening a clearer route to the CPA (Malaysia) qualification. The recognition and a strategic collaboration between KPTMSB and MICPA were formalised at KPTM Bangi's Grand Hall on Wednesday.

Over 100 Sabah students receive PETRONAS education sponsorships
More than 100 SPM school leavers in Sabah have been awarded education sponsorships under PETRONAS' Powering Knowledge Education Sponsorship programme. The recipients will study fields including chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, mechatronics and data science at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS and institutions in Malaysia, the United Kingdom and Canada. Two recipients, Audrey Jane Katrie and Nathan Hiew Zhi Jian, said they hope to use their studies to contribute back to Sabah.

Geetha Shanta Ram, creator of dyslexia tracking tool, receives community service award
Dr Geetha Shanta Ram, who developed MAPTrack, Singapore's first curriculum-based dyslexia tracking tool, in 2016, received a special award at the Community Service Excellence Awards on September 11. More than 3,000 students benefit from the tool each year. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Minister Masagos Zulkifli presented the awards.

Two Sarawak school teams head to Asia-Pacific after third place at MRCC 2026
Two Sarawak student teams won third place at the Malaysia Rocket CanSat Competition (MRCC) 2026 held at FELCRA Seberang, Perak, from 8 to 10 September. SMK Padungan took third in the 1KM Rocket & CanSat category while Sekolah Seni Malaysia Sarawak took third in the 1KM Rocket category. Both teams will represent Sarawak at the APRSAF-32 CanSat International Competition in Thailand from 27 to 30 October 2026.

Madrasah Al-Ma'arif plans curriculum modernisation ahead of 100th anniversary
Madrasah Al-Ma'arif Al-Islamiah will step up modernisation efforts in three key areas - teaching capacity, a digital-literate curriculum, and a meaningful learning environment - as it prepares for the next decade. Its principal, Cik Maisarah Kasim, said focus will be given to critical thinking, communication, leadership, digital literacy and AI. The all-girls religious school founded in 1936 will mark its 90th anniversary on 19 September and its 100th in 2036.

SUPER X 2026: 2,968 MRSM athletes compete at USM
The inaugural National Sports and Games Championship for MRSM, SUPER X 2026, concluded at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang after four days. A total of 2,968 athletes from 14 MRSM contingents took part, with Mara's director-general calling it a key platform for talent development.

Parents rethink school plans after MOE adds 60 Phase 2C places from 2027
Singapore's Education Ministry will reserve 60 Primary 1 places for Phase 2C from 2027, up from 40, at schools with intakes of 180 or more. Parents who moved to Bukit Timah for popular schools like Raffles Girls' Primary say the changes disrupt plans made years in advance, while others see new options. A two-track system will also apply to 12 schools, including Nanyang Primary and Tao Nan.

UMNO UK club proposes Global TVET Talent Network linking overseas talent with MARA, GLCs
UMNO's United Kingdom overseas club has proposed a Global TVET Talent Network to connect Malaysian talent abroad with MARA, government-linked companies and strategic industries. The proposal was raised during the debate on the UMNO president's policy speech at the 2026 UMNO General Assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur. It also touched on social media mastery and the welfare of Malaysians overseas.

Teachers at SMK Pengkalan Permatang compete to decorate desks for Merdeka
In Kuala Selangor, teachers at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pengkalan Permatang took part in a Merdeka-themed desk decoration contest during the National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations. The school also held classroom and vehicle decoration competitions that drew strong participation from students and staff.

Sabah elements to enter Year 1 and Form 1 curriculum next year
Kota Kinabalu: Elements of Sabah identity will be included in the new curriculum for Year 1 and Form 1 pupils from the next academic session, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said. She said this was agreed at the MA63 Implementation Action Council meeting on education, with full support from Sabah Education Minister James Ratib. Fadhlina also said 245 dilapidated schools in Sabah have been fully rebuilt, while 63 more are under construction.

Annuar: PISA results a wake-up call for Maths, Science in Sarawak
Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said Malaysia's latest PISA results should prompt stronger action on Mathematics and Science education, speaking after presenting MRP cheques at SMK Agama Sibu. He said Sarawak is working with Singaporean experts on Maths teaching methods and called for PTAs to run weekend programmes for pupils in 10 primary schools, with MRP allocations raised from RM5,000 to RM7,500.

245 of 416 dilapidated Sabah schools replaced, 63 still being built
In Sabah, 245 of the 416 dilapidated schools slated for full replacement have been completed, with 63 more under construction, the Education Ministry said. Two handovers were made: SK Buit Hill in Penampang (RM33.46 million) and Sekolah Menengah Sains Sabah at Bukit Padang (RM85.05 million), benefiting 991 pupils.

Cheekies Enterprise founder gives S$10,000 bursary for Republic Polytechnic students
Mr Nabill Shukry Johary, founder of Cheekies Enterprise Pte Ltd, is donating S$10,000 for a bursary for Republic Polytechnic (RP) students. The 'Cheekies Enterprise Bursary' is expected to be given out from around April 2027, with selected students receiving either $1,500 or $2,500. A former RP student who once received financial aid, he wants to help students facing money difficulties.

Third MOE Outdoor Adventure School campus opens on Kusu Island
A new 12-hectare campus of Singapore's Outdoor Adventure School (OBS) was officially opened on Kusu Island on Friday. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong opened the site, the school's third branch after Pulau Ubin and East Coast. By 2030 all secondary school students are to attend an outdoor adventure camp.

Malaysia's PISA 2025 reading score rises to 393
Malaysian students' reading score in PISA 2025 rose to 393, up from 388 in 2022. The National Book Council of Malaysia and Kota Buku welcomed the gain as momentum for building a reading culture, stressing the roles of families, schools and communities and initiatives such as the MADANI Book Voucher and PINTAR.

Sabah assemblywoman opens youth communication programme at UCSF
A youth communication programme, 'Youths in Communication 2.0' under Teraju Muda 2026, was held at University College Sabah Foundation in Penampang. Nominated assemblywoman Grace Lee Li Mei said young people should develop their own communication styles rather than conforming to conventional public-speaking techniques. The programme was organised with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Kota Kinabalu Toastmasters Club, UCSF and Rakan Muda.

OBS opens largest campus on Coney Island with wheelchair-accessible elements
Outward Bound Singapore opened its largest campus on Coney Island on Sept 11, featuring over 70 high-adventure elements including wheelchair-accessible ones. The 12-ha site, opened by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, will let OBS accommodate the entire Secondary 3 cohort by 2030. The $250 million project was first announced in 2016 and faced delays.

PTPTN launches BAeK scholarship for 10,000 poor students from 2026
The government through PTPTN introduced the Biasiswa Anak eKasih PTPTN (BAeK PTPTN), converting loans into scholarships for students from poor and hardcore poor families registered in the eKasih database. Starting 1 January 2026, full-time diploma and bachelor's degree students at approved public universities are eligible, with RM120 million allocated annually and the number of recipients raised to 10,000. Two recipients shared how the scholarship eases their education debt burden.
