National weightlifter Aniq Kasdan is adapting to the 65kg category after the 60kg class was dropped from the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. He will compete at the 2026 World Weightlifting Championships in October and the first IWF Olympic qualifier in Doha, Qatar in December.

Fahmi and Taufiq join 1,500 runners at Media Prima Merdeka Run in Bangsar
About 1,500 people took part in the Larian Merdeka Oxyenergy Media Prima 2026 in Bangsar, including Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil and Youth and Sports Minister Mohammed Taufiq Johari. Fahmi said the run brought leaders closer to the Lembah Pantai community and promoted a healthy lifestyle, and hoped more corporations would back similar programmes. Taufiq said the event fostered unity ahead of National Sports Day in October.

Three young Malaysian artists with disabilities show work at KL gallery
Three children with disabilities and rare conditions - Zidane, Branden Lim and Sabrina Teoh - have turned art into a way to express themselves and manage their conditions. Their paintings were shown in May at the Seni Mekar: Art in Bloom exhibition at KEN Gallery in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, alongside work by other young artists. Their parents say the show challenges the idea that such children cannot produce sellable art.

Mekdi National Takraw League 2026 opens in October across three cities
The Mekdi National Takraw League 2026 will open competition in Seremban, Sungai Petani and Gong Badak from October, with the final in Kuala Lumpur in November. Gajah Emas Industries managing director Kevin Lim welcomed the under-16 league as a platform for grassroots sepak takraw development. The league, organised by McDonald's Malaysia and Harian Metro, is backed by the Youth and Sports Ministry and the Malaysian Sepaktakraw Federation.

UPM overall champions of SUKIPT 2026, Sultan of Selangor congratulates
Universiti Putra Malaysia won the overall title at SUKIPT 2026 with 35 gold, 20 silver and 15 bronze medals, ahead of UiTM and hosts Universiti Malaya. The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, as UPM Chancellor, congratulated the contingent. The 7th edition ended at Dewan Tuanku Canselor, Universiti Malaya on Sept 6, with 46 meet records and two national records broken.

BAM open to Zii Jia training with existing players, says Tengku Zafrul
BAM president Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said the association's doors are open to Lee Zii Jia to train with existing players. He said the decision rests with Zii Jia, while BAM is focusing on young players and preparations for the 2027 SEA Games and LA28 Olympics. Former judge assault: textile tycoon and another ordered to enter defence
The Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court has ordered Gulati's Silk House owner Pavitar Singh Manjeet Singh and Nor Imran Nordin to enter their defence on charges of abetting grievous hurt against former judge Jagjit Singh Bant Singh. The screwdriver attack occurred near Solaris Dutamas on 19 Oct 2023 and is believed to have stemmed from a family dispute. Two other attackers were sentenced to seven years' jail after a prosecution appeal.

Universiti Malaya researchers turn prawn shells into biodegradable plastic film
Researchers at Universiti Malaya's Faculty of Engineering have converted discarded prawn shells into chitosan, a natural biopolymer, and used it with starch to produce biodegradable plastic films. In soil burial tests, the films began visibly degrading after three weeks and had substantially broken down by the fourth. The work links two Malaysian waste problems - food waste and plastic waste - but the material is still far from commercial use.

A woman in Petaling Jaya sold a 35-gram gold bangle she bought for about RM2,000 two decades ago for RM17,900. Hasnah Deraman, 54, said the rise in gold prices gave her a gain of almost RM16,000 over the original price. She advised women to buy gold according to their means as long-term savings.

Jalan Syed Putra-Jalan Istana junction to close in stages from Sept 14 for NPE 2 works
A section of the Jalan Syed Putra and Jalan Istana intersection in Kuala Lumpur will be closed in stages from Sept 14, between 10pm and 5am, to allow preliminary construction for the New Pantai Expressway Extension Project (NPE 2). NPE has advised motorists to plan their journeys and follow traffic management measures, and provided an infoline for inquiries.

Several high-profile cases were heard in Malaysian courts this week, including the final stage of the Bandar Utama school murder trial, where a 15-year-old is accused of killing a 16-year-old schoolmate. The Malaysian Parliament Open Day 2026 on 12 and 13 September in Kuala Lumpur served as a platform to bring youth closer to democratic institutions, said Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman. The two-day programme featured about 40 exhibitions by government and private agencies, plus activities such as robotics displays, VR, e-sports, futsal and a blood donation drive, targeting over 10,000 visitors.

Citaglobal wins RM82.1mil subcontract to build residential college at IPG Lembah Pantai
Citaglobal Bhd, through its wholly owned subsidiary Citaglobal Land Sdn Bhd, has secured an RM82.1 million design-and-build subcontract from Purnama Base Sdn Bhd. The project covers a residential college at the Institute of Teacher Education's Malay Language Campus in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur, and is due for completion on 30 June 2028. The 22-month contract is expected to contribute positively to the group's earnings.

Woman hurt as car flips after hitting raised road fixture in Petaling Jaya
A 46-year-old woman was injured when her Honda City overturned after its left tyre struck a raised metal road fixture on Jalan Gasing-Jalan Templer in Petaling Jaya at about 7.10am. She was taken to Assunta Hospital for a leg injury. Police say the poorly maintained fixture caused the crash and are investigating under the Road Traffic Rules.
