Drink-driving arrest after Raffles Avenue crash injures two pedestrians
A 42-year-old man was arrested for drink driving after a car hit two pedestrians outside the Esplanade mall on Raffles Avenue at about 10pm on Sept 16. The two pedestrians, a 40-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man who had just arrived from China on a work trip, were conscious when taken to Singapore General Hospital; the woman has a fracture and needs surgery. Police investigations are ongoing.

No bids meet reserve at first auction of seized luxury properties in $3b money laundering case
The first auction of luxury properties seized in Singapore's $3 billion money laundering case drew 65 attendees and 30 registered bidders at Knight Frank's Ocean Financial Centre office on Sept 17, but all seven properties were withdrawn after failing to meet reserve prices. The properties include six apartments at Gramercy Park and Sloane Residences and an office at Suntec Tower One, part of over 80 properties being liquidated by Deloitte Singapore on behalf of the Singapore Police Force.

Singapore seniors invited to share old stories at Malay Heritage Centre
The Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) is holding 'Projek Warganegara - Sejuta Yang Terawal' on Saturday, 26 September, 9.30am to 12.30pm, for seniors aged 60 and above. Participants can share and write their old stories, which may be preserved in the Founders' Memorial. The event also features Haji Alwi Jofrie and veteran singer Rahimah Rahim, with free entry, supermarket vouchers and bento from Restoran Hjh Maimunah.

Leong Sze Hian loses S$45,000 bail after Lim Tean allegedly flees to Malaysia
A Singapore court on Thursday ordered socio-political blogger Leong Sze Hian to forfeit the full S$45,000 bail he posted for lawyer Lim Tean, who allegedly absconded to Malaysia instead of surrendering to serve a jail term. District Judge Chay Yuen Fatt ruled that Leong had failed in his duties as bailor, including keeping daily contact with Lim.

HDB gets 430 responses on Long Island preparatory works; parkgoers seek to keep East Coast Park recreation
Singapore's Housing Board received 430 responses to an environmental study for preparatory works ahead of the Long Island reclamation off East Coast Park. Parkgoers asked that recreational spots such as Bedok Jetty and a surfing area known as Longkang Point stay usable, and that marine life including sea turtles and horseshoe crabs be protected. HDB said works will start at least 130m from the shoreline in phases west of Bedok Jetty, with monitoring of water quality, sediment, noise and dust.

Jalan Besar Stadium to add 1,500 seats as FAS donations hit S$12.35m
Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore will get 1,500 extra seats through a new South Stand, the Football Association of Singapore said in its annual report published on Wednesday. FAS president Forrest Li said the move responds to stronger fan support after the Lions' first AFC Asian Cup qualification, and donations to the association rose to S$12.35 million in the year to March 31, 2026.

G-Dragon's Peaceminusone and Toy Story pop-up to open at Clarke Quay in October
A pop-up collaboration between G-Dragon's fashion label Peaceminusone and Disney/Pixar's Toy Story will make its Southeast Asian debut at Clarke Quay, Singapore, from Oct 16 to Nov 11. The event, titled Toy Story | Peaceminusone: The First Fan, is being brought in with local collectibles company Mighty Jaxx and will feature exclusive merchandise and interactive elements. It follows previous editions in Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Taipei.

Evo Singapore 2027 to debut at Marina Bay Sands in January
Evo, the international fighting game tournament series, will hold its first Southeast Asian event at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from Jan 15 to 17, 2027. Five titles will be contested with a US$125,000 guaranteed prize pool, and the Tekken World Tour 2026 Global Finals will conclude there with a separate US$300,000 pool. 71-year-old man jailed 21 years for sexually abusing 11 girls over three decades
A 71-year-old man in Singapore was sentenced to 21 years' jail on Sept 17 for sexually abusing 11 girls, including his daughter, granddaughters and nieces, between 1990 and 2023. The High Court rejected his ill health as a mitigating factor, calling the offences heinous.

UN launches Global Heat Resilience Roadmap at Singapore cooling forum
The United Nations announced a Global Heat Resilience Roadmap on Sept 17 at a forum held at Parkroyal on Beach Road hotel in Singapore, setting out ways to protect water, food, schools, hospitals and power grids during heatwaves. The UN Environment Programme convened more than 60 countries at the inaugural Global Cooling Pledge Assembly to cut emissions from air-conditioning, which accounts for about 20 per cent of global electricity use. Singapore is among the signatory countries of the Intergovernmental Committee on Cooling.

Woman, 41, rescued from 16th-floor ledge at Rivervale Drive block in Sengkang
A 41-year-old woman was rescued after she was seen sitting on a low railing outside a 16th-floor HDB flat at Block 123B Rivervale Drive in Sengkang on Monday night. SCDF personnel came down by rope and caught her before she fell, after which she was taken to hospital and apprehended under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act 2008.

At the Eunos Cultural Centre on Sunday (Sept 13), 300 families living in one- and two-room flats in the Eunos area received packets of biryani and bags of groceries. The food distribution, organised by the Indian Muslim Social Service Association and the FairPrice Foundation, was welcomed by residents who said it brought comfort amid rising prices.

Singapore GP team works year-round to stage Marina Bay F1 race
Singapore GP's 70 full-time staff spend 362 days a year preparing for the three-day Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, from ticketing and crowd planning to tearing down the track within four and a half hours after the race. This year's race runs from Oct 9 to Oct 11, the latest date in the event's history, under a contract that runs until 2028.

Three men jailed for assaulting club patron who poured away beer
Three men assaulted a 50-year-old stranger at GG KTV Nite Club in Singapore on July 30, 2025, after he poured away a beer they offered him. Toh Soon Heng, 63, pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt on Sep 16 and was jailed eight weeks; his two accomplices had earlier been jailed three months and six weeks. The victim suffered facial and head injuries and was given a 34-day medical certificate.

Lorry driver trapped after two-lorry crash on Loyang Avenue
A 58-year-old lorry driver was trapped in his seat after two lorries collided on Loyang Avenue towards Tampines Avenue 9 at about 10.55am on Sept 16. SCDF freed him with hydraulic rescue equipment and he and his 46-year-old passenger were taken conscious to Changi General Hospital. Fourteen bus services were delayed by up to 20 minutes, and police investigations are ongoing.

Sengkang woman fails in appeal against 18-year sentence for killing adoptive father
The Court of Appeal in Singapore dismissed Tan Qiu Yan's appeal against her 18-year jail term for culpable homicide in the killing of her adoptive father at their Sengkang flat. The court found her motive was a belief that her father was depriving her of the flat her late mother had promised her.

Singapore PC prices jump up to 40% as AI data-centre demand squeezes memory and GPU supply

Databricks to invest S$445m in Singapore and double staff to over 500
American data and AI firm Databricks will invest more than US$350 million (S$445 million) in Singapore and double its workforce to over 500 within three years. The company, which runs its Asia-Pacific and Japan headquarters here, will move into a 32,000 sq ft office at IOI Central Boulevard Towers in November and train 20,000 people in data and AI skills. New local customers include iFAST, Singtel and Singapore Customs.

Man jailed 27 months after cannabis parcel intercepted at SingPost Centre
A 28-year-old Singapore permanent resident was sentenced to two years and three months' jail after a parcel containing about 136g of cannabis was intercepted at the SingPost Centre in Eunos Road in September 2025. Anton Andrievsky had ordered the drug from overseas via Telegram and had it sent to his Toa Payoh flat using the previous owner's details. He pleaded guilty to one count of attempted drug possession.

Air-con compressor dangles from Tampines HDB block, removed in under three hours
An air-conditioner compressor was left hanging from a fifth-floor HDB flat in Tampines on Sunday afternoon after its bracket partially came loose, held only by pipes and cables. A town council worker and police cordoned off the area below, and the bracket and compressor were removed within about three hours. Flat owners can be fined up to S$20,000 under Building Control Regulations if such units fall due to poor maintenance.
