Yayasan Sabah Group to host Silam Coast conservation research seminar in Kota Kinabalu
The Yayasan Sabah Group will hold a scientific survey seminar and research direction workshop for the Silam Coast Conservation Area from Sept 8 to 10 at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu. The event, expected to be officiated by Assistant Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, will gather over 80 participants from research institutions, government agencies and NGOs to strengthen conservation and development efforts.

Three sentenced in Kota Kinabalu court for cable theft, gambling, entering vehicle
A 47-year-old man was fined and jailed by the Magistrate's Court in Kota Kinabalu for possessing stolen copper cables. In separate cases, a woman was fined for online gambling and a man was fined for entering a vehicle without a satisfactory reason.

Teen motorcyclist dies after crashing into road barrier in Beaufort
A teenage boy died on Sunday night after his motorcycle crashed into a road barrier along Jalan Kampung Betanduk towards Kota Klias in Beaufort, Sabah. Police received a report at 8.14pm and confirmed the victim died at the scene. In separate incidents, police detained a man for drug possession in Kampung Nukahan and a woman for illegal gambling in Papar.

Stolen Proton Saga found after UMS student house break-in
A Proton Saga stolen during a break-in at a house occupied by female Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students in Kota Kinabalu was recovered hours later at a waste disposal area in Kingfisher. Two laptops and keys were also stolen. Police confirmed the students were safe and no arrests have been made.

Sabah health dept runs food safety drive on Mount Kinabalu trail
The Sabah State Health Department held a three-day food safety expedition on Mount Kinabalu from Sept 2 to 4. The program included inspections and education for food handlers, guides, and porters. Two establishments, Sutera Sanctuary Lodge and Mountain Torq, received the Clean and Safe (BeSS) recognition.

Missing Croatian climber on Mount Kinabalu found alive after two-day search
A 46-year-old Croatian climber, Mauro Persic, who went missing on Mount Kinabalu was found alive on Monday after a two-day search and rescue operation. He had sustained several injuries, including a swollen heel, suspected rib fractures, and a deep calf wound. Rescuers from the Ranau Fire and Rescue Station and the STORM team coordinated with Sabah Parks to locate him after he had used an unmanaged village trail.

Ministers to study housing affected Numbak fire students in school hostels
Ministers Datuk Mustapha Sakmud and Fadhlina Sidek will consider a proposal to house students displaced by the Kampung Numbak fire in school hostels. The fire on Aug 30 destroyed about 200 stilt houses and killed three children. Affected students will receive RM300 each from a government fund.

Human rights advocate Edlyn Beverly Joeman, former Bersih Sabah vice-chairperson, died today at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. She was 56 and had been battling acute myeloid leukaemia. Tributes from Bersih and fellow activists remember her as a champion for justice and Indigenous communities.

Two bus workers brawl at Inanam Terminal over passengers
Two bus company workers brawled at the Inanam Bus Terminal in Kota Kinabalu last Friday. The fight was believed to have been caused by a dispute over getting passengers. Both men, aged 38 and 37, have been detained by police to assist in the investigation.

Unhealthy air recorded at three Sabah monitoring stations
Three air quality monitoring stations in Sabah recorded unhealthy API readings on Monday afternoon, with the highest at Politeknik Kota Kinabalu at 156. The Sabah Department of Environment attributed the haze to transboundary fires in Kalimantan and reminded the public that open burning is prohibited.

Father tells coroner's court daughter would have been in permanent coma had she survived
The father of Zara Qairina Mahathir testified at the Kota Kinabalu coroner's court that doctors told him his daughter would have remained in a permanent coma had she survived. He described her critical injuries and his experience at Queen Elizabeth Hospital before she died on July 17 last year. The inquest into the 13-year-old's death continues.

Zara Qairina's father testifies police told him of death threat report against him
At the Coroner's Court in Kota Kinabalu, the father of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir testified that police informed him his ex-wife had allegedly lodged a report against him over a death threat. Mahathir Mohd Hashim, the 80th deponent, said he was questioned about how he allegedly hit and tortured Zara. The inquest into Zara's death, who was found under her dormitory building in July 2025, resumes on Sept 9.

Yong urges Sabah Heritage Council to restore fire-damaged KK Community Centre

Inquest: Zara Qairina's father says he was never asked for autopsy consent
The father of Zara Qairina Mahathir testified at the coroner's inquest in Kota Kinabalu that he was never asked for consent to perform an autopsy on his daughter. He described being at Queen Elizabeth Hospital when her death was confirmed and his observations of her injuries. The 13-year-old was found unconscious at her school's hostel before being pronounced dead at the hospital.
