The Ilanthamizh Mandram held its Ilanthamizh Vizha at the National Library Board building in Singapore on Sunday, September 6. Colouring and riddle contests were held for preschool and secondary students, with prizes given out from 4pm. Singapore Tamil Movement president R. Selvaraju was the guest of honour.

110 join 5km family walk at East Coast Park for Singapore's 61st National Day
About 110 people took part in a 5km family walk at East Coast Park on August 9 to mark Singapore's 61st National Day. The event was organised by the Ngee Ann Polytechnic Alumni Association, PSA Crescent Student Association and the Walk2Meet walking group. Breakfast and commemorative caps were given to participants at the end.

North Korea fires short-range ballistic missiles from Wonsan area
North Korea launched several short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area toward the sea off its east coast early Saturday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The missiles flew about 250km and were tracked by South Korean and US authorities, who shared information with Japan. Seoul convened an emergency security meeting and urged Pyongyang to stop the launches, calling them a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

Lorry driver jailed 23 months over Nicoll Avenue crash that left cabbie disabled
A lorry driver who ran a red light at Nicoll Avenue and collided with a taxi was jailed 23 months and disqualified from driving for eight years. The taxi driver, 56, was permanently disabled by his injuries and died two years later, though the court found no indication the death was caused by the accident.

Johor police arrest eight over 17 car break-ins, four involving Singapore vehicles at Desaru
Malaysian police arrested eight people aged 26 to 60 in two raids in Johor on Sep 7 and 8 over 17 car break-ins, four of which involved Singapore-registered vehicles parked at Desaru resorts on Sep 6. Three Malaysian men seized in the first raid in Masai and Majidee tested positive for methamphetamine, while a second raid in Kulai and Muar netted two Indonesian men and two Indonesian women. Police are still hunting at least four other suspects.

JAS monitors peat and landfill fires in Sarawak and Johor
The Department of Environment is paying special attention to peat and landfill fires in Sarawak and Johor amid hot, dry weather. In Sarikei, the Selalang landfill fire covers 1.5 hectares with 67 per cent extinguished, while in Kota Tinggi peat fires cover 17 hectares and 10.12 hectares. JAS is monitoring air quality and urging the public against open burning.

Social worker Saleha Rashidi wins Merit Award at SSP 2026
Saleha Rashidi, manager of Rise Above Transitional House at 1 St George's Lane, Singapore, received a Merit Award at the Social Service Professionals Awards 2026 on 11 September. The centre, Singapore's first secular halfway house for former female offenders, has helped more than 130 women and their families since it began operating in 2023.

Tamil debate at Pek Kio CC: innovation or tradition for Singapore?
A special Tamil debate will be held on the second floor of Pek Kio Community Centre at 21 Gloucester Road, Singapore, on Saturday, September 12, starting at 6.30pm after refreshments at 5.30pm. The motion asks whether Singapore's next phase of growth needs innovative thinking or traditional values, with Yusof Rawther Rajid as judge. Admission is free.

RLAF collects funds at 70 Singapore mosques for Nepal-Tibet flood victims
The Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation (RLAF) is running a donation drive at 70 mosques in Singapore until 14 September to help victims of floods along the Nepal-Tibet border that struck on 26 August. Acting Minister for Muslim Affairs Zaqy Mohamad urged Singapore's Muslim community to give after joining a collection at Masjid Al-Istighfar on 11 September. RLAF expects to raise more than $200,000 and says the response so far has been encouraging.

Toei Animation store to open at Jewel Changi Airport on Oct 3
An official Toei Animation store will open at Jewel Changi Airport on Oct 3, taking over the space left by the One Piece-themed Mugiwara Store, which closed on Aug 31. The store will sell merchandise from Dragon Ball, One Piece, Digimon Adventure and Girls Band Cry, and will include photo spots, interactive experiences and a gacha-style photo-strip machine at S$3.50 per pull.

New book on life in Occupied Singapore to launch at National Library on Sept 12
A new book, Remembering Syonan: 80 Objects From Occupied Singapore, tells the story of everyday life under the Japanese Occupation through personal artefacts such as labour identity booklets, ration cards and Sook Ching documents. It is co-authored by collectors Benjamin Seet and Dominic Tan and will be launched at the National Library on Sept 12, 81 years after the formal Japanese surrender.

Man found dead in 1.5m drain near SMK Tun Hussein Onn, Butterworth
A man was found dead in a 1.5-metre-deep drain near SMK Tun Hussein Onn on Jalan Siakap, Taman Kelisa Emas, Butterworth, today. The Perai Fire and Rescue Station received a call from police at 12.10pm to help lift the body, and the five-member operation ended at 12.47pm. The body was handed to police for further action.

Ken Lim appeals molest conviction and 13-month jail sentence in High Court
Former Singapore Idol judge Ken Lim Chih Chiang appealed to the High Court on Friday against his conviction and 13-month jail term for molesting a 25-year-old woman at his Hype Records office in 2021. His lawyer argued the victim's evidence was inconsistent, while Justice Hoo Sheau Peng reserved judgment to a later date.

OBS opens largest campus on Coney Island with wheelchair-accessible elements
Outward Bound Singapore opened its largest campus on Coney Island on Sept 11, featuring over 70 high-adventure elements including wheelchair-accessible ones. The 12-ha site, opened by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, will let OBS accommodate the entire Secondary 3 cohort by 2030. The $250 million project was first announced in 2016 and faced delays.

Driver pleads guilty to dangerous driving after 221 km/h six-car road trip
A 26-year-old man pleaded guilty in Singapore to dangerous driving after a six-car road trip on 27 October 2024, during which he reached 221 km/h on the Central Expressway and caused two collisions. He and a 22-year-old female passenger were injured. The case was adjourned to 14 September for mitigation and sentencing.
