Former Borneo Post editor and haiku poet John Tiong Chunghoo dies at 66
John Tiong Chunghoo, a former editor of The Borneo Post and an internationally published haiku poet, passed away in Sibu on Wednesday at the age of 66. His brother, Datuk Seri Patrick Tiong, confirmed the death. Tiong's prolific career included over 3,000 poems published on PoemHunter, with his work used in international examinations and universities worldwide.

Sarawak haze eases as hazardous API readings drop to two stations
Haze conditions in Sarawak are improving, with the number of monitoring stations recording hazardous Air Pollutant Index (API) readings falling to two as of 9am. Kuching and Serian remain hazardous, while several other areas in the state have moved into the 'very unhealthy' category. Air quality in some areas outside Sarawak, including Selangor and Sabah, has deteriorated.

Sibu assemblyman urges preservation of Iban handicraft skills, announces more workshops
Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh called for more effort to preserve traditional Iban handicrafts and the skills to make them, speaking at a workshop in Sibu on Tuesday. He sponsored the workshop and announced similar sessions will be held at longhouses across his constituency to empower Iban women and develop a community-based handicraft industry.

Jalan Oya Health Clinic proposed for temporary relocation

BCF 2026 postponed two days due to haze
The Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) 2026 in Sibu has been postponed by two days to September 5-14 due to haze and deteriorating air quality. The Sibu Municipal Council announced the decision as a precaution for public health and safety, with stall operations starting September 5 and main stage performances from September 6 to 14.

Man nabbed after punching sister, threatening to kill her
A 42-year-old man in Kampung Nyabor, Saratok was arrested for allegedly punching his sister and threatening to kill her after she scolded him. He also damaged her car windscreen. The suspect tested positive for drugs and has prior criminal records.
