Brigid Kosgei of Kenya won the women's race at the Great North Run in 1:06:15 after Britain's Eilish McColgan withdrew with a foot injury early in the half-marathon. Zouhair Talbi of the United States took the men's title in 59:47, and David Weir claimed a 10th wheelchair crown.

Arsenal won 2-0 at Sunderland to maintain their 100 per cent start to the Premier League season. Mikel Arteta called the decision to award Sunderland a penalty unacceptable, but David Raya saved the spot kick before Bruno Guimaraes and Bukayo Saka sealed the win.
