Gerakan Penang wants state education dept to probe claim pupil, 9, hurt by teacher
Gerakan Penang has asked the Penang State Education Department to investigate a claim that a nine-year-old boy was injured by his teacher at a Chinese national-type school in the Southwest district. The complaint was received on 8 September and the pupil claims he suffered bruises on his back and left arm. The state education director confirmed a report was received and an investigation is under way.

Two women die of electric shock at Besut fish pond, TNB denies its equipment involved
Two women aged 49 and 27 were found unconscious at a fish-rearing pond in Pantai Air Tawar, Kuala Besut, Terengganu, yesterday and confirmed dead, believed to be from electric shock. TNB said its equipment was not involved and will cooperate with authorities in the investigation.

Old tree falls in George Town, injuring family of three
In George Town, Penang, a roughly 90-year-old angsana tree fell on Jalan Macalister on 9 August, injuring three members of a family travelling in an SUV. Earlier, on 3 July, a 130-year-old tree fell on Jalan Batu Gantung in Air Itam, crushing two houses and damaging three vehicles. Residents and traders are calling for more frequent inspections of ageing shade trees in the city.

Police: Desa Green fatal accident not a hit-and-run
An 81-year-old pedestrian died after falling onto the road in front of a moving car at the Desa Green flats in Penang on Sept 8. Northeast district police said CCTV footage showed the driver stopped and helped the victim, contradicting earlier hit-and-run reports. The 60-year-old driver has been released on bail and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Two men found dead in Penang drain and Sungai Perak
Two men were found dead in separate incidents in Penang and Perak today. In Butterworth, the body of a 37-year-old man was retrieved from a drain near SMK Tun Hussein Onn in Taman Kelisa Emas, while in Perak the body of a 38-year-old man who jumped into Sungai Perak to retrieve his boat was found about four kilometres from where he went in.

Man found dead in 1.5m drain near SMK Tun Hussein Onn, Butterworth
A man was found dead in a 1.5-metre-deep drain near SMK Tun Hussein Onn on Jalan Siakap, Taman Kelisa Emas, Butterworth, today. The Perai Fire and Rescue Station received a call from police at 12.10pm to help lift the body, and the five-member operation ended at 12.47pm. The body was handed to police for further action.

Worker dies after scaffolding support structure collapses at Bukit Mertajam construction site
A worker died after a temporary structure supporting scaffolding collapsed at a construction site in Bukit Mertajam on 8 September. The victim fell from the eighth floor and was pronounced dead at the scene from severe head injuries. Penang's Department of Occupational Safety and Health issued a stop-work order and is investigating under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.

Babysitter in Air Itam remanded seven days after 13-month-old dies
A 13-month-old boy was found unconscious at his babysitter's home in Kampung Melayu, Air Itam, Penang, on Tuesday and later pronounced dead at Penang Hospital. Police have detained the 44-year-old babysitter and the victim's mother, with the babysitter remanded for seven days until Sept 15 and the mother for three days. The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, and the cause of death is pending laboratory analysis.

Final report on Penang ferry collision to be finalised after probe
The final report on the September 1 collision between MV Mekar Jaya and the Teluk Bahang ferry in Penang waters will be finalised after the investigation is complete. A joint investigation committee involving the Marine Department, the Penang Port Commission and Penang Port Sdn Bhd is identifying the cause. 21 passengers were initially reported injured.

Elderly woman, 81, killed in hit-and-run at George Town apartment
An 81-year-old woman died after being struck by a car in a hit-and-run at the Desa Green Apartments parking area in George Town. Police say she fell after alighting from an e-hailing vehicle before being hit. The driver has not come forward.

Two motorcyclists hurt in separate crashes in Balik Pulau and Kepala Batas
Two motorcyclists were injured in separate road accidents in Penang on the same day. The first occurred near SK Titi Teras in Balik Pulau, and the second in Lorong Haji Hassan 2, Kepala Batas. Both victims were rescued by firefighters and taken to hospitals.

CAP urges public probe into Penang ferry-tanker collision that injured 21
The Consumers' Association of Penang has called for a transparent investigation into the Sept 1 collision between a ferry and a chemical tanker near the Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal that injured 21 passengers. CAP president Mohideen Abdul Kader questioned the effectiveness of the port's new Vessel Traffic Management System and urged authorities to make findings public.
