Kuching South mayor Datuk Wong Hong Sheng attended a filial piety and student award ceremony in Kuching, jointly organised by the Kuching Padawan Foochow Association and the Kuching Simpang Tiga community association. He urged young people to study hard, cultivate good character and take an interest in Sarawak's development, noting the state's free higher education scheme from 2026.

DRB-HICOM-Harian Metro Pantun Contest Expands to Southern Zone, Melaka First Host
The Pantun Contest co-organised by DRB-HICOM and Harian Metro is expanding to the Southern Zone after a pilot in Selangor last year. Melaka is the first state to host, with the quarter-finals and semi-finals at SMK Tinggi Melaka, Banda Hilir, tomorrow. Four Melaka schools are competing for a place in the final in Johor.

Melaka student with Marfan syndrome graduates from PMM with 3.81 GPA
Muhammad Akmal Yazali, 22, from Melaka, received his Electronics Engineering (Computer) diploma from Politeknik Merlimau Melaka with a 3.81 GPA despite living with Marfan syndrome and scoliosis. He was among 1,195 graduates at PMM's 24th convocation in Port Dickson, and will continue his bachelor's degree at UTHM.

PKNPk boosts pupils' digital literacy through StratCom Jr.
The Perak State Development Corp (PKNPk) is continuing its StratCom Jr. Programme with Sekolah Kebangsaan St. Michael (SKSMI), Ipoh, to strengthen digital literacy and media skills among primary school pupils. PKNPk also contributed an iPhone 15 and media accessories to the school's media team.

Serian schools reopen tomorrow as haze eases, Lubok Antu stays on PdPR
Schools under the Serian District Education Office in Sarawak will resume normal operations from Sept 14 after air quality improved, the state education department said. Schools under Lubok Antu will continue home-based learning, while the other 12 district education offices in the state also reopen. Face masks will be distributed to affected schools and outdoor activities remain suspended when the API exceeds 100.

Lovely Sabana registers as UPSI student
Lovely Sabana Augustine, 20, from Tumpat, Kelantan, has registered as a Bachelor of Education student at Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) in Tanjong Malim, Perak. She scored a perfect 4.00 CGPA in STPM and received financial assistance after her story went viral in August. She aims to become an educator and improve her family's livelihood.

Republic Poly student to fly Singapore flag at WorldSkills drone contest in Shanghai
Shafriel Nur Iman, an 18-year-old aviation management student at Republic Polytechnic, will represent Singapore in the unmanned aerial systems category at the 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai from Sept 22 to 27. The event marks the first time drone systems are featured at the competition, and he will face 10 rivals from countries including China, Japan and the UAE.

ITE beauty student to represent Singapore at WorldSkills Shanghai
Winnalyn Tay, 19, a third-year Higher Nitec beauty and wellness management student at ITE, will represent Singapore at WorldSkills Shanghai in just over a week. She won silver at WorldSkills ASEAN in Manila in August 2025 and will face 21 competitors in the beauty therapy category.

34 ITE and polytechnic students to represent Singapore at WorldSkills in Shanghai
Thirty-four young people from ITE and the polytechnics will represent Singapore at the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai from Sept 22 to Sept 27, competing in 31 categories, a record for the country. Among them is 21-year-old Brandon Yap, a Ngee Ann Polytechnic electrical engineering student who will compete in mechatronics with teammate Cedric Yau. Senior Minister of State for Education Janil Puthucheary addressed the team at a send-off ceremony on Sept 4.

245 of 416 dilapidated Sabah schools rebuilt, 63 under construction
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said 245 of the 416 dilapidated schools identified for full replacement in Sabah have been completed, with 63 still under construction. She spoke after handing over the rebuilt SM Sains Sabah and SK Buit Hill in Bukit Padang, Penampang, projects worth about RM118.5 million.

Sabah TVET centres face Q4 training freeze over rating delay
Hundreds of young Sabahans may miss out on TVET training this year because centres that earned their 2026 ratings in August cannot use them until January 2027. Likas Assemblyman Tham Yun Fook has asked the Human Resources Ministry and PTPK to create a transitional quota for the fourth quarter of 2026 so the centres can take in students.

Top STPM student in Tumpat cannot pay RM2,549 UPNM registration fee
Siti Farah Damia Mohd Khairi, 20, from Kampung Talak in Tumpat, Kelantan, has won a place on the Bachelor of Defence Human Resource Management degree at UPNM but cannot pay the RM2,549 registration fee due on 20 September. Her mother can only raise RM1,000, and the family is appealing for public donations.

Blind since birth, Muhammad Qayyim receives KIAS degree
Muhammad Qayyim Nizar Sarimi, 28, who has been blind since birth, completed his Bachelor of Tahfiz al-Quran (Management) degree at Kolej Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Sultan Ismail Petra (KIAS) in Nilam Puri. The 2023 International Quran Recitation champion received his scroll at KIAS's 26th convocation ceremony at Dewan Johor, KIAS.

Kalaivani Ilango becomes third Tamil teacher in family to win Excellent Teacher Award
Kalaivani Ilango, a Tamil teacher at Anderson Serangoon Junior College in Singapore, has received the 2026 Excellent Teacher Award. She is the third member of her family to win it, after her mother and father. All five members of the Ilango family work as teachers.

UMS offers 6,171 undergraduate places for 2026/2027 session
Universiti Malaysia Sabah has offered 6,171 undergraduate places for the 2026/2027 session, with registration starting today. A total of 5,251 students registered at the Kota Kinabalu campus, 698 at the Labuan international campus and 222 at the Sandakan campus. The intake includes 3,380 B40 students, 14 disabled students, eight Orang Asli, 15 athletes and 215 international students from 12 countries.

Zahid asks Higher Education Ministry to consider free flight tickets for B40 students
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has asked the Higher Education Ministry to coordinate with universities on providing free flight tickets to B40 students studying outside their home states. He also directed UMNO's menteris besar and chief minister in Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Pahang and Perak to issue free tickets to students from those states studying in Sabah and Sarawak. He said this in his winding-up speech at the 2026 UMNO General Assembly at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre.

Zambry: student groups split into 'agree' and 'disagree' camps as UUCA replacement drafted
Higher Education Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said discussions are ongoing with all parties on a new law to replace the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971. He has asked the National Student Representative Council to organise students into groups representing those who agree and disagree so their views can be considered. The repeal was announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in August, with a Bill expected in Parliament this year.

41 schools in Tanjong Manis to get smart TVs before year end
Tanjong Manis MP Dato Yusuf Abd Wahab handed over smart TVs to schools in his constituency at a ceremony at SMK Semop today. He said all 41 schools in the Tanjong Manis parliamentary area are expected to receive the sets before the end of the year. He also inspected the RM300,000 upgrade of SMK Semop's dining hall, now about 90 per cent complete.

All PCF Sparkletots preschools to offer three mother tongues from 2027
Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong announced that all PCF Sparkletots preschools will offer Chinese, Malay and Tamil from 2027, expanding mother-tongue learning across 350 centres nationwide. He said nearly 40,000 children will benefit, speaking at an event at One Punggol.

Sarawak parents, teachers split over school reopening as haze persists
Parents and teachers in Sarawak are divided over schools reopening next Monday while haze keeps air quality at unhealthy levels. Three stations recorded very unhealthy API readings on Saturday, including Serian at 236, Lundu at 202 and Lubok Antu at 218. Chung Hua Batu 35 in Serian was closed a month ago because of the haze.

Tvetmara records 94.5pc graduate employability, 214 receive qualifications in Kota Kinabalu
Tvetmara recorded a 94.5 per cent graduate employability rate for its 2025 cohort, with 25.2 per cent earning RM2,000 and above. A total of 214 graduates received their qualifications at the 16th Tvetmara Kota Kinabalu Convocation held at the Sabah Federal Administration Complex auditorium on Saturday.

UPSI helps new student stranded in Batang Kali
A new UPSI student was stranded in Batang Kali, Selangor after her family's vehicle broke down on the way to Tanjung Malim for registration. UPSI sent a team to help, repaired the vehicle, provided accommodation and dinner, and gave RM2,232.35 in semester aid plus RM500 in alms.
