Flood in Larut Matang and Selama: 76 evacuees at Dewan Changkat Larah relief centre
Seventy-six people from 24 families are sheltering at a temporary relief centre at Dewan Changkat Larah in Kamunting, Larut Matang and Selama, Perak, after flooding. The number rose from 69 at 4am to 76 at 8am, with evacuees from Taman Larah Damai, Kampung Changkat, Taman Lela and Taman Kamunting Mutiara.

The Malaysia Ultra-Trail by UTMB in Taiping generates a direct economic impact of between RM14 million and RM18 million a year based on previous editions. This year's ninth edition recorded a good safety record with only one hospital admission for heat exhaustion, while Malaysian runner Michelle earned direct qualification to the World Finals in Chamonix after finishing second in the 50km category.

Yokouchi, Taniguchi win 100km titles at Malaysia Ultra-Trail in Taiping
Japanese runners Yutaro Yokouchi and Mika Taniguchi won the men's and women's MY100 categories at the Malaysia Ultra-Trail by UTMB 2026 in Taiping. Yokouchi finished the 100km race in 12:18:44, while Taniguchi clocked 15:37:54. The three-day event drew more than 2,700 participants from 63 countries.

310 cable theft and telecom vandalism cases reported in Perak
Perak recorded 310 cable theft and telecommunications network vandalism cases from January to June this year, with Kinta district reporting the most. State communications committee chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi said 125 cases have been charged in court and 67 investigation papers opened, while a state telecommunications security committee has been formed with MCMC, police and the state legal adviser. A community awareness programme will be held on 28 September in Kinta.

Michelle Ng second in MY50 at UTMB Taiping trail race
Michelle Ng Qian Ying, 28, finished second in the women's MY50 category at the Malaysia Ultra-Trail by UTMB in Taiping, completing the 50km race in 7 hours 29 minutes 38 seconds. China's Wang Da Yu won and Hong Kong's Li Sham Ming was third. Michelle said an ankle injury a week before the race did not stop her from reaching the podium.

Raintown Film Festival in Taiping draws 152 entries, Agnes Yap wins top prize
The third Raintown Film Festival at Paragon, Taiping, received 152 short film submissions, up nearly 48 per cent from 2025. Agnes Yap Jen Nie won the RM8,000 Grand Prize for her nine-minute documentary 'Daughter of the Last Journey', shot in Sungai Petani, Kedah. The festival also launched a tertiary filmmaking sandbox with IACT College.

Perak denies claim Taiping Hospital has no graduate medical officers
The Perak state government has denied a news portal's claim that Taiping Hospital has no graduate medical officers. State health committee chairman Datuk A Sivanesan said 93 graduate medical officers are currently posted at Malaysia's oldest hospital, though he acknowledged other shortcomings are being addressed. He spoke after a visit with Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh at the hospital, and also addressed parking issues to be tackled through mechanical parking structures.
