Chef Ahmad Soffian: from washing dishes in Melbourne to Gilda in George Town

Ahmad Soffian Salim, a mechanical engineering graduate who once worked in Malaysia Airlines' engineering department, moved to Melbourne in 2012 and rose from kitchen assistant to head chef of an Australian restaurant. He and his wife Aim Aris later set up pop-up kitchens in Jakarta, Hong Kong, Japan and Thailand before the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted their plans, and he now heads the kitchen at Gilda Restaurant in George Town, Penang.
