Chow: Penang unlikely to table equal CDF law at coming sitting
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state is unlikely to table a proposed law guaranteeing equal constituency development funds at the coming state assembly sitting because of time constraints. He said the state legal adviser has prepared a draft enactment, which was presented at the state exco meeting on Wednesday, but more deliberation and stakeholder engagement are needed. The proposal follows DAP's call for Penang to legislate equal allocations; opposition assemblymen currently receive RM60,000 a year against RM500,000 for government assemblymen.

Chow Kon Yeow tells Penang exco to finish outstanding Penang2030 projects before handover
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has directed state executive councillors to list Penang2030 initiatives that are unfinished or not started, saying he wants to hand over the state cleanly to his successor. Presenting the eighth-year report card at Holiday Inn Resort in George Town, he said about eight in 10 key targets are achieved or progressing, with agriculture and household water use lagging.

Penang records RM17.3bil manufacturing investment, highest in the country
Penang recorded RM17.3 billion in approved manufacturing investment in the first half of this year, the highest in Malaysia and up 38 per cent from a year earlier. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state accounted for 34 per cent of the national manufacturing total, speaking at the 2026 Local Authorities Convention in Bertam.

Leapmotor C10 and B10 now CKD in Gurun, Kedah, from RM118,800
Stellantis Malaysia has completed local assembly (CKD) of the Leapmotor C10 and B10 at its plant in Gurun, Kedah, investing around RM25 million. The C10 is priced at RM125,000 while the sole B10 Design variant costs RM118,800, both with an eight-year or 160,000km battery warranty.

Eight vehicles destroyed in fire at Kuala Kedah cargo jetty
Eight vehicles on a barge at the Kuala Kedah Cargo Jetty caught fire last night. The fire is believed to have started from a lorry carrying medicine before spreading to seven other vehicles, and was brought under control at 9.32pm. The cause and losses are still under investigation.

InterContinental Hotels & Resorts will open its first resort in Malaysia at Teluk Bahang, Penang, in December 2026. The 348-room property on the island's western coast will feature four restaurants and bars, a spa, family facilities and event spaces. It marks the brand's first resort format in the country.

Two men found dead in Penang drain and Sungai Perak
Two men were found dead in separate incidents in Penang and Perak today. In Butterworth, the body of a 37-year-old man was retrieved from a drain near SMK Tun Hussein Onn in Taman Kelisa Emas, while in Perak the body of a 38-year-old man who jumped into Sungai Perak to retrieve his boat was found about four kilometres from where he went in.

Magazine Road lane in George Town to close 21 days for LRT works
A section of Magazine Road in George Town, Penang will be partially closed for 21 days from Sept 14 to Oct 5 for road widening and utility relocation works under the Penang Mutiara Line LRT project. The leftmost lane in front of St Giles Wembley Hotel heading towards KOMTAR will be shut around the clock, while other lanes remain open.

Man found dead in 1.5m drain near SMK Tun Hussein Onn, Butterworth
A man was found dead in a 1.5-metre-deep drain near SMK Tun Hussein Onn on Jalan Siakap, Taman Kelisa Emas, Butterworth, today. The Perai Fire and Rescue Station received a call from police at 12.10pm to help lift the body, and the five-member operation ended at 12.47pm. The body was handed to police for further action.

Alor Setar High Court rejects GISBH challenge against Kedah fatwa
The Alor Setar High Court dismissed an application by GISB Holdings Sdn Bhd and its CEO Nasiruddin Ali to challenge a Kedah fatwa declaring GISBH a deviant teachings organisation. Judge Evawani Farisyta Mohammad ruled the civil court has no jurisdiction as the fatwa involves the Sultan's prerogative. GISBH and Nasiruddin will appeal, after similar challenges in Shah Alam and Kangar were also rejected.

A single mother in Alor Setar, Kedah, says she could not buy a birthday cake for her youngest child because money is short after her husband died five years ago. Nor Aza Hamzah, 44, supports four children by gutting catfish, collecting boxes and selling used cooking oil, and an appeal for donations has been made through her phone number.

Penang defends Taman Manggis PPR evictions, says units needed for genuinely poor
The Penang state government has defended its phased eviction of residents from the Taman Manggis People's Housing Project (PPR) in George Town, saying background checks found some residents owned luxury vehicles and businesses. State housing chairman S. Sundarajoo said 19 units have been acted on so far, with 103 more cases to be processed, and that alternative housing and rent-to-own options were offered.

Police arrest man carrying parang while begging in Taman Pekan Baru
A 44-year-old local man was arrested after he was believed to have been begging while carrying a parang around Taman Pekan Baru, Sungai Petani. The suspect, a homeless man from Bakar Kapor, was traced after a video of the incident went viral and alarmed residents. The Kuala Muda district police chief said no weapon was found on the suspect during the arrest.

Chinese national pleads not guilty to kidnapping compatriot in Alor Setar
A 27-year-old Chinese man, Wang Hao, pleaded not guilty at the Alor Setar Sessions Court to kidnapping a 33-year-old Chinese woman at a house in Taman Amira, Jalan Langgar, on Aug 7. The judge denied bail and set Oct 11 for mention. The case follows an Aug 8 police raid in which two suspects were shot dead and six people were arrested across Kedah, Penang and Kuala Lumpur.

Lorry driver charged with physical sexual assault of stepdaughter in Kulim
A 33-year-old lorry driver pleaded not guilty at the Kulim Sessions Court to a charge of physical sexual assault against his 17-year-old stepdaughter. The alleged offence took place at a house in Kulim between 3 and 13 October last year, and the court refused bail, setting 22 October for mention.

Contract worker pleads guilty to snatching RM10,000 gold chain in Arau
A contract worker pleaded guilty at the Kangar Magistrate's Court to robbing and injuring an elderly woman while snatching a gold chain worth RM10,000 at a house in Bumbung Lima, Arau on 5 September. Wan Afandi Wan Salehudin, 26, was granted RM6,000 bail with one surety, and sentencing is set for 23 September.

Court of Appeal upholds RM920,508 award against Penang condo developer over defects
The Court of Appeal in Putrajaya dismissed Melariang Sdn Bhd's appeal against a High Court order to pay RM920,508 over defects at The Cantonment condominium in Jalan Cantonment, George Town. The defects included 101 missing fire doors, a wet riser room, pool leakage and car park water ponding. The developer must also pay RM50,000 in appeal costs.

Kedah Immigration deports, blacklists 140 undocumented migrants
Kedah's Immigration Department sent home 140 undocumented migrants held at the Belantik Immigration Depot in Sik, flying them out via KLIA yesterday. The group of Myanmar, Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani, Indonesian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian and Kenyan nationals was also blacklisted from re-entering the country.

Man who went viral begging for money detained in Sungai Petani
A 44-year-old man was arrested by police in Sungai Petani last night after going viral on social media for allegedly asking the public for money and shouting at a vehicle owner. The incident is believed to have happened in front of a bookshop at the Taman Pekan Baru commercial centre, where the suspect was said to be holding an object resembling a machete. Kuala Muda police said no public report has been received so far.

Motorcyclists tour Lenggong heritage sites
A group of motorcyclists led by Norhadi Kaharuddin explored historical and heritage sites in Lenggong, Perak over four days from 28 to 31 August. The trip covered Hutan Lipur Lata Kekabu, Bukit Sapi, Lata Perahu, 'Mini Amazon' Kampung Beng and the Lenggong Valley Archaeological Gallery. Videos of the journey were shared on social media to highlight geological treasures such as the Perak Man skeleton.
