Penang health dept: viral Bukit Mertajam Hospital meal photo was afternoon tea, not main course
The Penang State Health Department said a viral photo of food served to on-call medical officers at Bukit Mertajam Hospital showed the afternoon tea portion, not the main meal. State health director Dr Zulhizzam Abdullah said the four daily meals follow the Health Ministry's diet manual with 1500 to 1800 kcal a day, and improvements will be reviewed.

Sim: Penang could host gold bazaar and storage facility
Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Steven Sim proposed that Penang set up a gold bazaar and possibly a gold storage facility to build the state into a regional gold hub. He spoke at the launch of Public Gold's refinery in Batu Kawan Industrial Park, which can refine up to 10 tonnes of precious metals a year and creates about 1,000 jobs.

Section of Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway Closed 45 Days for LRT Works
A section of the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway in George Town will be closed periodically for 45 days from 16 September to 31 October for utility relocation and road widening under the LRT Mutiara project. The closures affect the leftmost lanes and slip roads at several locations heading towards Komtar and Bayan Lepas. MRT Corp has advised motorists to exercise caution.

Four children who drowned in Kulim buried in a single grave
Four children who drowned after falling into a drain at Taman Desa Kayangan, Sungai Karangan, Kulim, were buried in one grave at the Masjid Jamek Nurul Ehsan Islamic cemetery today. Two died at the scene and two on the way to Kulim Hospital.

Welfare Dept upgrades evacuation centres for disabled ahead of monsoon
The Welfare Department is upgrading temporary evacuation centres nationwide to better serve persons with disabilities during the monsoon season. Its director-general Datuk Che Murad Sayang Ramjan said the improvements include dedicated spaces and sign language interpreters, after a state-level PPS management simulation at the Sungai Jawi multipurpose hall in Nibong Tebal. More than 9,000 PPS have been identified nationwide and 6,000 volunteers are trained for mobilisation.

Penang festival moves to Tasek Gelugor after 50 years at Sungai Nibong
Pesta Pulau Pinang will return from December 1 to 31, but at a new venue, Padang Menora in Tasek Gelugor, after five decades at Sungai Nibong. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the move follows the closure of the old site for the Mutiara Line LRT station and depot. The former grounds will be redeveloped under a transit-oriented masterplan.

Four children who fell into Kulim drain buried in single grave
Four children who fell into a drain at Taman Desa Kayangan, Sungai Karangan, Kulim last night have completed post-mortems at the Forensic Department of Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Alor Setar. Their bodies will be taken back to Kulim for burial in a single grave at the Tanah Perkuburan Islam Masjid Sungai Karangan today. The incident happened when they tried to retrieve a ball that had fallen into the drain.

Childminder in Air Itam charged with negligence over 13-month-old baby's death
A 44-year-old childminder was brought before the Sessions Court in Georgetown today, accused of exposing a 13-month-old boy in her care in a manner that may have caused his death. She pleaded not guilty and was granted RM8,000 bail with one surety, with the case set for mention on 16 November pending a post-mortem report. The alleged offence took place at a house in Taman Desa Mawar, Air Itam, Northeast District, at 2pm on 8 September.

Man who stabbed wife 13 times remanded seven days in Kulim
A man who surrendered at Lunas police station after allegedly killing his wife at Taman Tiram, Hi-Tech, in Kulim, has been remanded for seven days. The 39-year-old victim died with 13 stab wounds, and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Four Chinese nationals pleaded not guilty in the Alor Setar Sessions Court to kidnapping a Chinese woman at a house in Taman Amira, Jalan Langgar, on Aug 7. The judge denied bail and set Oct 11 for mention. The case follows an Aug 8 shootout that killed two suspects.

26 litterers, 14 of them foreigners, ordered to clean Johor public spaces
Twenty-six people convicted of littering, 25 of them for cigarette butts, were ordered to perform community service at five locations across Johor. SWCorp said 3,095 littering notices have been issued in the state since Aug 1, with 107 cases concluded in court and RM71,550 in fines.

Four boys drown in drain at Taman Desa Kayangan, Kulim
Four boys aged eight to 12 died after falling into a drain at Taman Desa Kayangan, Sungai Karangan, Kulim, on Monday evening while trying to retrieve a football. Two died at the scene and two more died on the way to Kulim Hospital. Police say the drain was about 10 feet deep and there were no witnesses.

A 39-year-old woman died after her husband allegedly stabbed her 13 times with a folding knife at their home in Taman Tiram, Kulim Hi-Tech, Kulim, last night. The 43-year-old suspect surrendered at Lunas police station and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

3,736 ageing trees in Penang show early health warnings
A total of 3,736 of Penang's 12,500 ageing trees show early signs of health problems needing monitoring. State exco Jason H'ng said 167 high-risk trees are in George Town and 77 have already been felled by MBPP in phases from August through 2027.

Residents question Jelutong reclamation growing from 4ha to 28ha
A residents' group in Jelutong, Penang is questioning why the proposed sea reclamation for the Jelutong landfill rehabilitation project has grown from 4ha to 28ha. Protect Karpal Singh Drive Action Committee says the joint development agreement only allows additional reclamation needed to secure the landfill perimeter, but the EIA shows most of the 28ha would be used for processing and recycling excavated waste. The group also warns against using recovered waste as fill material and says the state could terminate the agreement.

Factory bus plunges into drain near Jalan Tun Dr Awang roundabout, driver hurt
A factory bus crashed through a road divider and fell into a three-metre-deep drain near the Jalan Tun Dr Awang roundabout in Penang during evening peak hour. The 49-year-old driver was trapped and later extricated by firefighters before being taken to Penang Hospital.

Public raises RM100,000 in four days for Penang busker's wife cancer treatment
In Bukit Mertajam, Penang, well-wishers raised RM100,000 in four days to fund cancer treatment for the wife of visually impaired busker Robert Maidin, known as Uncle Robert. Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim's team organised a charity mini-concert at Jit Sin Independent High School that raised over RM46,000, with Sim topping up the rest to reach the goal. Robert's wife's breast cancer has spread to her lungs.

Batrisya Umairah Ahmad Rezuan, 20, who can only see with her right eye after two nerve surgeries, is pursuing English Language and Literature studies. Nurul Atiqah Husna Azli, 20, from Pasir Mas, Kelantan, was raised by her grandparents and is now in the Education programme.

Penang teacher moved to district office pending probe into pupil abuse claim
Penang's state education department has temporarily reassigned a teacher to the district education office after a complaint of physical violence against a pupil. The district office is investigating the claim, and the department says the pupil's welfare will be protected with psychosocial support. The case involves a pupil at a Chinese primary school in the Southwest district who was found with bruises.

STPM top student who cared for siblings after mother's death starts at USM
Muhammad Adam Iskandar Azharunaim, 20, who looked after his three siblings after their mother died of brain cancer on 24 August, has begun his studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Georgetown. His father died of COVID-19 in 2021, and his 16-year-old brother, who is disabled, is studying culinary skills at SMK Serdang Baru in Kedah.
