Indonesian crew member jailed eight weeks for smuggling ivory tusk into Singapore
A 30-year-old Indonesian ship crew member, Hafiludin, was sentenced to eight weeks' jail in Singapore on Thursday after he was caught bringing a 550g elephant ivory tusk into the country. He had hidden the tusk in a thermos flask and was stopped during an X-ray screening at the Keppel Entrance Crew office on Aug 9. He had bought the tusk from a merchant in Lagos, Nigeria, for US$150 and lacked the required permits.

New book uncovers 1,000 years of Malay history in Singapore
A heritage researcher, Mr Sarafian Salleh, 56, will launch his book '1000 Years of Sejarah Melayu in Singapore' on 12 September at The Pod, National Library Board (NLB). The book highlights Singapore's or Temasek's role as an important trading centre in Malay archipelago history, based on Persian explorers' records calling it 'Sabana Emporio'.

Driver pleads guilty to dangerous driving after 221 km/h six-car road trip
A 26-year-old man pleaded guilty in Singapore to dangerous driving after a six-car road trip on 27 October 2024, during which he reached 221 km/h on the Central Expressway and caused two collisions. His mother, Mdm Sapiah Yahaya, 62, is proud that Danish now travels independently by bus and MRT and does vocational training at a hotel in Orchard Road. The award recognises students in government-funded special education schools who overcome challenges.

Tan Kiat How: Artistes may voice humanitarian concerns but must not undermine public order

CEO's $468k suit against ex-girlfriend dismissed by High Court
Singapore's High Court dismissed a claim by Chander Agarwal, CEO of India-listed TCI Express, to recover $468,090 he spent on former girlfriend Felicia Lee during their relationship. Senior Judge Lee Seiu Kin ruled most of the sums were gifts, not loans, and that Agarwal had failed to prove two other amounts. The couple met on a flight in 2019 and dated from September 2022 to December 2023.
