Worker, 35, dies at Jurong Port Road site after being hit by compressed air hose
A 35-year-old construction worker died at a worksite at 37 Jurong Port Road on Sep. 11 after being struck by a hose connected to a compressed air pump during foundation works. The Ministry of Manpower identified Keller Foundations (S E Asia) Pte Ltd as occupier and employer, and has instructed the company to stop all concreting works while it investigates.

Baker's Brew, now BB Atelier, in liquidation; 95% of customers refunded
Singapore bakery Baker's Brew Studio, which rebranded as BB Atelier in late 2025, has gone into liquidation through a creditors' voluntary winding-up. It ceased operations on Jun 1, 2026, closing its Great World City outlet, and says over 95 per cent of affected customers have been refunded. The company also faces civil suits, including one from PS.Cafe's operator heard at the State Courts on Sep 1.

Worker dies after being struck by hose at Jurong Port Road worksite; MOM investigating
A 35-year-old worker died on Sept 11 after being struck by a hose connected to a compressed air pump at a construction site at 37 Jurong Port Road. The Ministry of Manpower has identified Keller Foundations (S E Asia) as the employer and occupier, and has ordered concreting works at the site to stop while it investigates. It is the second workplace death at a Jurong Port Road construction site in recent months, after a 23-year-old Bangladeshi worker was killed by falling scaffolding on Aug 3.

NUS undergrad first in Singapore to get new defibrillator under breastbone
A 19-year-old National University of Singapore undergraduate who suffered a cardiac arrest at his camp's medical centre has become one of the first patients in Singapore to receive an extravascular implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (EV-ICD). The device, implanted under the breastbone at the National University Hospital, delivers shocks to restore normal heart rhythm.

Crystal Jade shutters Great World outlet, third closure this year
Crystal Jade has closed its Hong Kong Kitchen outlet at Great World mall in Singapore, its third outlet closure in 2026 after Hillion Mall and Suntec City. The company says the move is part of a review of its operations and outlet network, and that affected staff were offered redeployment. Fifteen outlets remain across its six brands.

Spottiswoode Park residents vote to spend $188,000 on estate upgrades
Residents of Spottiswoode Park in Singapore have chosen three estate improvement projects worth $188,000 under the country's first participatory budgeting trial. The winning ideas, picked from 162 proposals and put to a vote in July, are themed void deck furniture, a reflexology pebble path and stone seats. 52 Singaporeans held in China; actress and influencer allegedly at linked Singapore networking sessions
Singapore's MFA said 52 Singaporeans were arrested and detained in Guangxi, China, in a law enforcement operation against suspected pyramid scheme activities. A Mothership reader said he attended two networking sessions in Singapore linked to the alleged scheme, including one at a bar along Alexandra Road in March 2026 where he allegedly met a Singaporean actress and a car influencer.

Indonesian crew member jailed eight weeks for smuggling ivory tusk into Singapore
A 30-year-old Indonesian ship crew member, Hafiludin, was sentenced to eight weeks' jail in Singapore on Thursday after he was caught bringing a 550g elephant ivory tusk into the country. He had hidden the tusk in a thermos flask and was stopped during an X-ray screening at the Keppel Entrance Crew office on Aug 9. He had bought the tusk from a merchant in Lagos, Nigeria, for US$150 and lacked the required permits.

Woman sues Sheng Siong over trolley of rice hitting her at Clementi outlet
A woman is suing Sheng Siong and one of its employees over an incident at the supermarket's Clementi West Street 2 outlet on Mar 11, 2021, where a trolley loaded with bags of rice allegedly struck her from behind. Ms Dong Lihua claims injuries to her left foot and back, and says the incident worsened a degenerative disc condition; she is seeking about S$11,000 in medical and transport expenses plus damages. Sheng Siong denies negligence and says her own negligence caused or contributed to the injuries.

Chinese national admits breaking into ex-boyfriend's home, tried to grab police gun
A 30-year-old Chinese national pleaded guilty on Wednesday to breaking into her ex-boyfriend's mansion on Swettenham Road and attempting to grab a police officer's gun to harm herself. She had also allegedly broken into the same home in September 2024. Sentencing is set for September 15.

NUS student wins Prime Minister's Book Award for bilingual effort
A National University of Singapore (NUS) student received the Prime Minister's Book Award at the NUS University Cultural Centre on 31 August. She was the only Malay/Muslim pre-university recipient at the Ministry of Education Special Awards ceremony, where 211 awards were given out. She hopes her experience will encourage other Malay students to value language and culture.

Man, 32, arrested at Tiong Bahru Plaza after struggle with police; wanted for drug offences
A 32-year-old man was arrested at Tiong Bahru Plaza on Sep. 7 during a routine police patrol. He was found to be wanted for drug-related offences and had a vaporiser in his possession. He struggled during the arrest and was subdued with necessary force; the case has been referred to the Central Narcotics Bureau and the Health Sciences Authority.
