MACC officer tells court no immunity deal with Azman in Muhyiddin trial
An MACC senior assistant commissioner told the Kuala Lumpur High Court that businessman Datuk Seri Azman Yusoff was not given special treatment or immunity in exchange for testifying against Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. Mazery Mohd Zaini, the 29th prosecution witness, denied under cross-examination that a deal existed, though he confirmed Azman's companies received RM9.35 million from Jana Wibawa contractors.

Woman who exploited two underage girls for prostitution to be assessed for reformative training; client jailed four weeks
A 20-year-old woman in Singapore pleaded guilty on Sept 14 to three charges including recruiting a person for exploitation and living on the earnings of prostitution, after exploiting two girls aged about 16. She will return to court on Oct 22 for a reformative training suitability report. One customer, Syahirul Daud Abdul Razak, 26, was sentenced to four weeks' jail for obtaining sexual services from the younger girl.

Businesswoman fined RM20,000 for tampering with SE meter at Penampang store
A 40-year-old businesswoman was fined RM20,000 by the Sessions Court in Kota Kinabalu after pleading guilty to tampering with a Sabah Electricity meter at her grocery store in Penampang. The court heard a bypass cable was found behind the meter, causing RM10,648.02 in revenue losses between October 2024 and January this year.

Mother of stabbed student vows to keep seeking justice after accused acquitted
The mother of a female student killed in a stabbing at SMK Bandar Utama Damansara 4 in Petaling Jaya last October said she will keep seeking justice after the male student accused of murdering her daughter was acquitted by the High Court. The family's watching lawyer will contact the Deputy Public Prosecutor to decide on follow-up action.

Five teens in Kuching admit gang robbery, sent to Henry Gurney School
The Sessions Court in Kuching on Monday ordered five male teenagers to be placed at Henry Gurney School in Puncak Borneo after they pleaded guilty to gang robbery. The robbery took place at a convenience store along Jalan Tun Jugah at about 4am on June 1, where a 19-year-old worker was threatened with a machete and wooden sticks and about RM1,000 in cash and cigarettes were taken. Two 18-year-olds will be held until they turn 21, while the three younger accused, aged 14 and 15, were each ordered to spend three years at the juvenile rehabilitation facility.

Lawyer criticises acquittal of student in schoolgirl's murder, offers free help to prosecutors
A Malaysian lawyer has expressed dismay on Facebook over the High Court's acquittal of a male student accused of murdering his 16-year-old schoolmate Yap Xin Xuan, saying the verdict sends the wrong message. Melaka High Court refuses to record RM1.7mil road accident settlement
The High Court in Melaka refused to record a proposed consent judgment settling a RM1.7 million negligence suit because the victim, Sultan Nur Mohamad, is permanently disabled and lacks capacity to manage his own affairs. Judicial Commissioner K Raja Segaran said the court must first approve the settlement under Order 76 rule 10 of the Rules of Court 2012, and directed the respondents to file a proper application by today, with the hearing fixed for Sept 17. The case arose from a March 2, 2024 collision between two motorcycles in which Sultan suffered severe traumatic brain injuries.

Federal Court hears PKR and Zuraida arguments over RM10m bond, decision reserved
The Federal Court in Putrajaya heard arguments from PKR and former Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin over a RM10 million bond that the Court of Appeal reduced to RM100,000. PKR argued the sum was reasonable because the value conferred on Zuraida exceeded RM10 million, while Zuraida's counsel said no special category of political contract exempts the bond from Section 75 of the Contracts Act. The court reserved its decision.

Appeal Court cuts Shafee's damages against Malaysian Bar to RM120,000
The Court of Appeal in Putrajaya on Monday reduced the damages the Malaysian Bar must pay Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah from RM340,000 to RM120,000. A three-judge panel led by Datuk Dr Choo Kah Sing allowed the Bar's appeal in part and dismissed Shafee's cross-appeal for more. The court kept RM20,000 in aggravated damages but set aside awards for loss of job opportunities and for stress and health effects.

German man gets 12 months' jail in Kota Kinabalu for illegal entry and obstructing immigration officer
A 40-year-old German national, Kuecuekboga Suleyman, was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment by the Sessions Court in Kota Kinabalu on two counts of entering Sabah illegally and obstructing an immigration officer. He changed his plea to guilty midway through his trial, receiving six months' jail for each charge, to run consecutively from the date of conviction.

Former national fin swimming coach gets a week's jail over falsified race results
A former Singapore national fin swimming coach, Muhammad Faiz Suhaimi, 33, was sentenced to a week's jail on Sept 14 after pleading guilty to conspiring to falsify results at a competition in Malaysia in January 2023. The false records were used to get six athletes selected for the 2023 SEA Games in Phnom Penh. The judge acknowledged Faiz's whistle-blowing but said a short custodial term was needed to deter such offences.

Bangladeshi worker jailed 13 months, 2 weeks for Geylang fight and false robbery report
A 41-year-old Bangladeshi national was sentenced to 13 months and two weeks' jail after fighting an acquaintance near Lorong 14 Geylang and then falsely telling police he had been robbed of S$256 and his work permit. Bhuyan Md Ozzjal pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt and providing false information, with other charges taken into consideration. He had worked in Singapore for 16 years and hopes to keep working here.

Lorry driver fined RM2,500 for keeping ex-girlfriend's explicit videos
A 22-year-old lorry driver was fined RM2,500 by the Ayer Keroh Magistrate's Court in Melaka after pleading guilty to possessing explicit videos and photos of his former girlfriend. S Devesh was also ordered to serve five months in jail if he fails to pay the fine, and he has paid it.

Former Teluk Sepangar Quarry director claims trial over RM165,000 payment
A former director of Teluk Sepangar Quarry Sdn Bhd has claimed trial at the Sessions Court to a charge under Section 218(1)(c) of the Companies Act 2016 over an alleged RM165,000 payment to Viva Mekar Sdn Bhd, a company where he was also a director. Tan Kian Kok was granted RM7,000 bail with one surety, and the court fixed Sept 21 for mention and document handover. If convicted, he faces up to five years' jail, a fine of up to RM3 million, or both.

OKU man pleads not guilty to sexually assaulting six-year-old girl in Permatang Pasir
A 35-year-old man pleaded not guilty at the Butterworth Sessions Court to physically sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl. The alleged incident took place at Masjid Jamek Haji Abdul Latiff in Permatang Pasir on 3 September. The court ordered him sent to Hospital Bahagia in Tanjung Rambutan for a mental health assessment and set 14 October for mention.

Jamil Khir charged over RM860.3m Tabung Haji asset disposal, bail set at RM300,000
Former minister Jamil Khir Baharom was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court with three offences under Section 403 of the Penal Code over the improper disposal of more than RM860.3 million in Lembaga Tabung Haji assets. He pleaded not guilty and was granted RM300,000 bail with one surety, with his passport surrendered and mention fixed for Nov 5.

Appeal succeeds: jail term for caregiver who killed two-year-old raised to 20 years

In Kuala Lumpur, former Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom pleaded not guilty to three charges involving RM860,308,770.51 of Tabung Haji funds. He is the latest of five people charged at the Sessions Court following the public release of the Tabung Haji RCI report in July.

Teen acquitted of schoolmate's murder after court finds him insane
The High Court in Shah Alam acquitted a 15-year-old boy of murdering his 16-year-old schoolmate at a secondary school in Bandar Utama last year, ruling he was of unsound mind at the time. Judge Adlin Abdul Majid ordered him detained and treated at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak at the pleasure of the Sultan of Selangor. His lawyer said the defence proved insanity under Section 84 of the Penal Code and the prosecution failed to rebut it.

Four Indonesian men charged in Manjung over smuggling of 104 migrants
Four Indonesian men were charged at the Sessions Court in Manjung, Perak, over two separate migrant smuggling cases last month. Three are accused of smuggling 64 Indonesian migrants off Pulau Talang, while another is accused of smuggling 40 migrants, including two Vietnamese nationals, near Pantai Hutan Kuari Sungai Batu. No plea was recorded as the case falls under High Court jurisdiction, and the court set Oct 27 for mention.

Woman who set fire to Sembawang HDB doorway after breakup jailed five to six months
A 46-year-old woman set fire to the doorway of a 10th-floor HDB unit in Sembawang on June 30 after hallucinating that she was trapped following a breakup with her boyfriend. The fire damaged her ex-boyfriend's unit and a neighbour's windows, forced about 30 residents to evacuate, and caused over $10,000 in repairs. She pleaded guilty to intentional arson and was sentenced to five to six months' imprisonment.

Former minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom pleaded not guilty at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court to three charges under Section 403 of the Penal Code linked to the Tabung Haji royal commission of inquiry. He is accused of causing TH to dispose of assets worth more than RM860 million to a property development company, and was granted RM300,000 bail. Jamil Khir said he will defend himself and sees the proceedings as a chance to clear his name.
